Spiders get inside of your house through a number of entry points, including through doors, windows, cracks, and any type of opening they can fit through. The best way to keep spiders from getting inside is to seal up all of these entry points.
But even if you seal up as many entry points as possible, a few spiders are still bound to get inside. So, check out these top 10 ways to naturally get rid of spiders at home, or at least keep them to a minimum.
Use Cinnamon
While we may use cinnamon candles and incense around the holidays, the smell of cinnamon is actually useful for keeping spiders away at any time. You can either burn a cinnamon candle or put some cinnamon oil into an essential oil burner to disseminate the smell, which spiders do not like.
Spray Vinegar
You can use vinegar to keep spiders away. Mix water and white vinegar in a spray bottle, and then spray it on the areas where spiders enter your house, including in crevices and around windows and doors. The smell will dissipate quickly after it dries.
Rub Lemon Peel
Spiders detest citrus, so you can rub lemon peel on windowsills or any place where spiders live. This should help either deter them from entering your house in these areas or drive them out after you apply the lemon scent.
Use Lavender
Lavender is a heavenly scent! But, spiders don’t like it. So you can create a simple DIY spray to get rid of them. Add warm water, 7 drops of lavender essential oil, and 1 tablespoon of liquid soap. Shake it up, and then spray it onto problem areas where spiders either come into your house or currently live.
Get a Eucalyptus Plant
Eucalyptus has a minty, pine scent with a hint of honey. And just like with many other essential oil smells, spiders don’t like eucalyptus. So, get a eucalyptus houseplant or two and place them strategically around the house or outside by the front door or windows.
Spray Peppermint
What smells better than peppermint? Not much! But, again, spiders don’t like this scent. Make your own peppermint spray at home by filling up a spray bottle with 20 drops of peppermint essential oil and water. Then spray it into cracks and corners inside your house to send spiders packing without having to kill them.
Set Out Horse Chestnuts
Some say that horse chestnuts repel spiders as a result of specific chemicals inside of them. So, try placing horse chestnuts around your house in corners, on window sills, or in other areas where spiders enter or live in your house. If possible, cut a few holes in the nuts to help release the unpleasant chemicals.
Spray Bleach
Keep spiders away by spraying bleach in certain areas in your house, including around windows and doors. Make sure to dilute the bleach before spraying it. The acidity of the bleach will kill spiders, so they are most likely to stay away from areas you spray with the bleach.
Keep Pet Food Covered
Bugs are attracted to pet food, and spiders are attracted to bugs. So make sure to seal up your pet food. Either seal up the bag completely or use plastic boxes to store the pet food.
