Betty White was one of the most iconic actresses of our time and she will be deeply missed. Thankfully, we have SO many memories to look back on from her life!
Whether it was on screen or in person, her interactions were always memorable.
While someone’s screen presence is one thing, their reputation as a person is much more indicative of who they are.
Let’s look at some encounters people have had with Betty White that just show what kind of person she was.
1. Don Cheadle from “The Golden Palace”
Don Cheadle and Betty White spent some time together on the show “The Golden Palace”, a spinoff of Golden Girls. It didn’t last long, but Cheadle has remembered how kind she was through all these years:
“Betty was the best of the best. when we were shooting scenes together it was difficult for the DP [director of photography] to get the lighting right between my chocolate and betty’s white! she was either a ghost or i was the shadow.
I came on set one day and betty had darkened her makeup/hair a bit in an attempt to accommodate for it. nobody asked her to do it. and that’s just one small example of her overflowing generosity. my dogs thank her too. she gave us our veterinarian [recommendation] who we still see to this day. she was the goldenest of them all and will be forever missed.”

2. “She always remembers”
David Goodman, one of the writers from “Golden Girls” never forgot that SHE never forgot. He tweeted this after her passing:
During my two seasons on Golden Girls, I only spoke to Betty White once. [Twenty] years later she came in to Family Guy, I walked up to her and said, “I’m sure you don’t remember me…” and she said “Of course I remember you, David Goodman! I loved the writers!” No one better. RIP.

3. She loved animals
The Audubon Nature Institute knew ALL about her devotion to the treatment of animals. They shared a story of her activism when they had an emergency during Hurricane Katrina. It’s safe to say it’s EXACTLY what we imagine she would do.
“We lost a conservationist, animal advocate, and friend. When the penguins and sea otters were evacuated to [Monterey Bay Aquarium] for Hurricane Katrina, Betty White paid for the plane to relocate them. She did not ask for fanfare; she just wanted to help.”
4. She was so good at playing the good AND bad guy
When Mary Tyler Moore was told that the producers needed a role for The Mary Tyler Moore Show, they told her that they needed someone who was as sweet as White but could be fierce when needed. Mary’s response?
“They wrote a character who was described as being “as sweet as Betty White but as vicious as a barracuda.”… I said to the writers… “Why don’t you actually interview Betty White?”
5. Mia Farrow met her by accident
Farrow saw White but didn’t want to intrude (famous people know how it is). White had NO problem, however, coming up to her and saying hello, totally unprompted!
Once [I] was in a Beverly Hills restaurant [and] Betty White sat down at the table next to mine. [I] didn’t want to bother her. But after a few minutes she tapped me on the shoulder and with that radiant smile said, “ Hello! [I’m] Betty White.” People don’t do that in BH. I just love her.

6. She was a ruthless scrabble player
Millicent Martin had a disastrous run-in with Betty White… over scrabble! She was quite the competitor:
She comes here, she sits down, we have a little caviar, we have a little drink, and we talk about what happened over the week. But then suddenly, I feel her getting edgy, she wants to get to the table. She is ruthless, let me tell you, ruthless. She always says, “Well I know we’re friends here, but when we get over there, all friendships cease.” And she means it. And I have to tell you, she beats us most of the time.
7. She was sweet, fun, professional, bawdy and SO much more
Vicki Lawrence knew White from The Carol Burnett Show and ended up working with her for years after that. They became friends for life and loved each other dearly. This is what she said in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter:
My recollections of Betty are nothing but sweet and happy and fun and raunchy and bawdy. But she was so professional in the middle of all that. I don’t remember Betty ever missing a line. It was so rare. She was so prepared. The only outtake I can remember ever was on Mama’s Family. [Her character] was having an affair with Mayor Tutweiler. We got to the taping and she said, “Mayor Tit-willow.” And it got stuck in her brain, and she couldn’t get it out, and it just digressed into a laughing mess.
She was the consummate professional – Carol used to call it “playing in the sandbox.” She never called it working. And Betty is the best playmate in the world. On game shows, and playing games with her, she was smart and clever. She was on it. She was so good at that stuff. If you were playing against Betty, you better bring your A-game because she was there to beat your [butt].
8. Robert Redford had a crush on her as well!
Betty White had no issue letting people know she had a crush on Robert Redford! As it turns out, he had a crush on her, too! Her personal assistant revealed that she even got a cardboard cutout of him as a 99th birthday joke! Redford revealed his secret crush on her after she passed:
“Betty lived life devoted to her craft and her love of animals… She made us all laugh, including me. I had a crush on her too!”
9. Sandra Bullock loved her comedic timing
Comedic timing is REALLY tough to nail. Bullock worked with her in “The Proposal” and thought that hers was perfect.
“Timing isn’t easy in comedy, because you have to navigate other people’s timing. Betty pivots like I have never seen, making it look seamless… The rest of us just remain silent and pray we’re not cut out of the scene.”
10. Steve Martin was shocked she came to see him perform
When Martin was getting started in comedy, he was pretty unknown. When he and Betty White met in 1974, she told him that she had come to see him, some nobody, perform!
“In 1974, I was an obscure opening act for Linda Ronstadt at the Troubadour in Los Angeles. Passing through the lobby before the show, I saw Betty White and her husband Allen Ludden waiting in line.
I loved Betty White, so I went up to them: “I’m so honored to meet you both.” And then I said, “Isn’t Linda great?” She said, “We came to see you.” I said, “Why?” “Because we heard you were funny.”
I was elated.

11. She only had a single request to go on the show “Pyramid”
Her requests weren’t hard, either. Want to know what they were? Andy Richter tells us:
I hosted one of the many attempted reboots of the “Pyramid” game show in 2010 and Betty was a celebrity guest. The only thing she asked for all day was two bean-and-cheese burritos from Taco Bell.

12. She could make things sexy
Carol Burnett became friends with White after a few appearances on her show. She wasn’t a comedian, but she knew how to get lines to come across perfectly. Burnett said:
“She’d come on my show, and if there was a tinge of risqué humor in one of our sketches, she’d roll with it and make it even funnier and add a little wink to show that she was thinking of something sexy. She’s not a stand-up. She’s not a jokester. It’s the way she can twist a line to get a laugh.”
13. She liked to curse!
We all have a guilty pleasure. For White, it looks like it was using colorful language! Still, even while dishing out a solid joke or dropping the f-bomb, she did it with a smile and no mal intention.
“She just puts out so much light into the world… Everybody thinks she’s just so sweet, but she loves to throw her little F-bombs around and does it with this beautifully dimpled smile. She’s, in every way, just a delicious human being. ”
14. Ryan Reynolds loved her
There was always hilarious romantic tension between Betty White and Ryan Reynolds. He shot “The Proposal” with her but had been a fan since watching her on “Golden Girls” when he was young.
“I heard that scripts for “Golden Girls” were only 35 pages, which makes sense because so many of the laughs come from Betty simply looking at her castmates.”
He also said:
“She’s just this, sweet… lovely, older woman who is just beloved by this whole crew and cast and everybody would just do anything for her… She gets up to leave and everyone’s sad cause it’s her last shot, and she’s just walking out the door to say goodbye, and she turns around right in the door jam and she says, “I just want everyone here to know, this is the most fun I’ve ever had.” […]
The woman just kills everyone. Everybody spends the rest of the day at a perfect 90-degree angle, laughing.”
The world looks different now. She was great at defying expectation. She managed to grow very old and somehow, not old enough. We’ll miss you, Betty. Now you know the secret. pic.twitter.com/uevwerjobS

15. She turned down SNL three times!
Saturday Night Live asked White to be on the show three times, each to a no! Finally, they waited a few decades and booked her officially in 2010. People loved her.
Seth Meyers said:
“RIP Betty White, the only SNL host I ever saw get a standing ovation at the after-party. A party at which she ordered a vodka and a hot dog and stayed til the bitter end.”
Tina Fey said:
“I love Betty… She would go home every night to the hotel, and [I’d ask], “How was your night?” She was like, “Oh it was good, I had a vodka and a cold hot dog.” I was like, that’s the secret, I guess.”

16. Aimee Carrero has the BEST first words with Betty White
Carrero met White on the show “Young and Hungry” in 2017. The first thing that White said to her?
“Nice wedding ring. When I was young, if you wanted to f*ck a guy you had to marry him. So I was married three times.”
I worked with #BettyWhite on her 95th birthday. I thought you should know the very first words she ever said to me:
“Nice wedding ring. When I was young, if you wanted to fuck a guy you had to marry him. So I was married 3 times.”
RIP Betty, you gave us everything. pic.twitter.com/UiEF8bhsGl— Aimee Carrero (@aimeecarrero) December 31, 2021
17. Rue McClanahan played game on set with her
McClanahan and White had a special relationship because of their time on the set of “Golden Girls”. When they would wait between scenes, they would play games together! As we’ve already learned, White was always the competitor:
“Betty and I loved word games. And we would play word games every year, every week, every day; we had games going all the time. Some we created, some we took and just did… You’d say, “Make a list of men’s attributes A to Z. Go!”
18. She treated people like they were perfectly equal
It’s hard to be more famous or influential than White! Still, every interaction she had with people made them feel like she was their equal – that’s not an easy feat for people like her. Kathy Griffin recounted this interaction:
“Betty White. Where do I begin? I’ve known her long, but I think the first time I met her was when she was a guest star on “Suddenly Susan” in the late ’90s. Everyone was very excited she was on the show. I had accidentally parked in her parking spot that day. She walks in [and] yells from the back of the soundstage for everyone to hear, “Where’s that redheaded b*tch who stole my parking spot???” SWOON. A friendship was born.
Another time I was lucky enough to present at the prime-time Emmy awards with the [late] great Don Rickles. He and Betty and I [were] sitting backstage at rehearsal with the great Mary Tyler Moore. Don and Betty and I were being silly and vulgar and Mary was not having it. Mary got up and walked away and Don turned to Betty and I and said, “She was never the warmest.” We laughed way too hard.
But when Betty… was gracious enough to be a guest star on the episode of “Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List”, where we get my mom Maggie a play date with Betty White, [it] was a bucket list memory, touching and hilarious at the same time. We surprised Maggie, so when Betty shows up at Sizzler Senior Early Bird Special, my mom about fell OUT! And I got to spend the day on film and off camera, with my mom and Betty White. It was basically a dream girls day. Betty legit treated my mom like a friend. She answered every question, acted very shocked at every word out of my mouth, which was mandatory. She hung out with my mom, like a peer. She treated me like we were in the same club or something. She actually treated me like an equal in the comedy gurrrl world. She was as sharp and funny as she was soft and wise, and no matter how long this world continues to spin, there will be only one Betty White.”

19. She had a strange diet!
Her co-stars in the sitcom “Hot in Cleveland” loved filming with her, but were a bit confused when it came to her diet! Jane Leeves said:
“The best part of working opposite her is the giggling. We’d often go to dinner or take these promotional trips together – she’d be the last one there. She closed the place down. Betty eats hot dogs and Red Vines. How she survives on that diet, I don’t know.”
