There’s nothing that screams independence more than having your own home.
But with soaring real estate prices and stagnating wages, the younger generation’s chance of having their own house seems like it’s becoming less and less likely.
Thankfully, there are alternatives.
Some people find ways to downscale their life, which opens new possibilities in house ownership.
The tiny house
At 23, Amanda Bloomquist finally moved into a house she could call her own.
She said that the price of rent had made her consider building a tiny home instead. But her place is anything but tiny.
The well-planned home sits inside a 26-foot trailer with elevated ceilings which makes her home spacious and cozy at the same time.
A labor of love
The project took about $40,000 dollars and 2 years of labor.
She shared with Tiny House Giant Journey, a YouTube channel that features tiny homes, that she made the design herself.
She took inspiration from other people who made houses such as hers.
Then, to cut down the costs, she enlisted the help of her dad who, she admitted, has great skills when it comes to construction.
She also worked and saved.
Then, to cover the production costs, she shared in the interview that she had to work her butt off.
She had to take on two jobs and use the money she had saved through the past years.
She also shared some of the parts of having the house beside the price.
She said that it gave her and her dad the opportunity to become closer while also improving her construction skills.

Small space equals big potential
The house may be small but it has amazing features and amenities. Her house is actually comparable to a studio-type loft condominium unit.
She has a living room, indoor bathroom, a kitchen, and a bed deck that sits on top of the general area.
Outside the house, she has her own porch where she can do yoga or eat breakfast. She also has a small garden where she plans to plant some vegetables.
Well though-out furnishings
She has done an incredible job of furnishing her home with what’s functional.
For one, her couch is a tiny home staple. The couch has extra storage underneath the foam.
Then, the coffee table can easily fill up the space of the L-shape couch which can then transform it into a guest bed.
She also doesn’t have a TV.
But what she does have is a projector. She can just unfurl the screen in the kitchen area so she can watch Netflix or YouTube.
Even with her “tiny” space, it’s furnished better than usual condominiums.
She has a full-sized washer-dryer in her bathroom, which saves her trips to the laundromat. She also has a shower cabin that’s beautifully tiled green.
On her bed deck, she has a full-sized bed that sits right underneath a sky window. One, it gives her head space. Two, it lets in a lot of natural light.
And three, it gives her a stunning view of the night sky whenever she sleeps.
A different kind of freedom
For Amanda, having a tiny house meant different kinds of freedom.
She shares that she loves going outdoors and traveling, two things that could be difficult if she’s paying rent.

She also acknowledges the advantages that she has but also encourages people to stay committed if they want to make things happen.
This house is a testament to that commitment.
