How much do you try to store in your garage? Is there so much stuff in there you can’t even fit the family cars? Or even a single car?
The garage is often a catch-all place for all the things we can’t store in the house. Or for things we could store in the house but we just don’t have the room.
Here is a selection of 40 garage storage idea that will maximize your space and allow you to store so much more.
1. Ceiling mounted shelves
No floor space? Or a choice between parking your car in the garage or storing your stuff? Then consider ceiling mounted shelves!
2. Engineer your space
If every inch counts, think of doing something like this. The sides of this shelving unit now have a pegboard, meaning extra space for storage.
3. Wall mounted storage
That is a sturdy looking shelving unit. Great for all manner of stuff that needs to get packed away. Like camping equipment.
4. Pegboard
Pegboards are a great way to store and organize smaller, lighter items like hand tools. So a huge pegboard like this in the garage is a brilliant idea.
5. Repurpose a pallet
I love this idea. My shovels, rakes, and so forth are just propped against the wall. However, this old pallet makes a great way to keep them in place and keeps them from tumbling over onto your car.
6. Don’t waste space
If you have a large family, space is always going to be at a premium. So make wise use of it. This garage utilizes every inch of wall space, and while you can’t see it in this image, it even has a few work stations.
7. Rolling cabinets
This makes me think of a kitchen cabinet, but a cabinet is a cabinet. And having it on wheels could be handy. You could put a shelf in there or not, either way, junk is out of sight.
8. The workshop
There is a lot going on here, but this is a functional workshop with lots of storage space. Everything is organized and seems to have its own spot.
9. Bins
Hmm. I’m not sure I would do this. Aesthetically, it looks neat and tidy. But only one of those is labeled, and getting at whatever is on the top shelf would be a hassle. And what, you open every one of them looking for what you want?
10. Recycle
If you have big kitty litter bins—or large containers of any kind—why not use them as storage bins in the garage. Keep things organized and do your bit for the environment.
11. Paint storage
Good idea. Although I store paint cans in the basement, not the garage. To many extreme weather changes for the garage. However, food containers would extend the life of your paint.
12. Bungee cords
This is a really good idea, and one I would never have thought of. I always have bungee cords in the trunk but using them in this manner is brilliant. And they are cheap!
13. Not just for laundry
I like this idea better than the bins mentioned earlier. At least with the wire racks or see through bins, you can see what’s inside.
14. Gone fishin’
Do you have a few people in the family who like to fish? Or just one person who has a lot of rods? Here is a perfect idea for storing the rods in the garage. All it takes is some PVC piping and a pool noodle.
15. Hook up
You can find cheap hooks in the dollar store, and you can hang just about anything on them. It will take a little ingenuity to position as needed, but once in place, they will save floor space.
16. Double-Duty Shelf Brackets
Why restrict these to a clothes closet? This is a great idea for utilizing overhead space in the garage. And a perfect place to store your trimmer.
17. Hang-it-All Hooks
More hooks, but a different kind then the type mentioned above. I use big hooks for garden hoses, but I can see I can store things I never though I could hang.
18. Hmm.
How tall are you? Or how low is your garage roof? If you can reach easily, this is a great idea. And you don’t need to limit yourself to shop rags when storing things up there.
19. Muffin tin hardware bin
These look like brand new tins, and you could certainly do that. But why not use the old grungy ones for the garage and use the new ones for the muffins?
20. On-a-Roll Pegboard Doors
Here’s a DIY project for anyone who has a selection of hand tools they are looking to store. The best part is the doors, which make use of even more space.
21. Paint station
If you’re like me, you have a huge selection of painting gear. Your favorite brushes, edger, and more. Here is neat—literally—way to store them.
22. Pegboard with a twist
Or should I say pegboard with cubby holes. Because face it, the pegboard isn’t going to work for everything. But the PVC pipe takes care of small things you can’t hang.
23. Recycle Peanut Butter Jars
Obviously, it doesn’t have to be peanut butter jars. Go crazy and use mayonnaise jars. Whatever you use, this is a sensible, earth friendly way to recycle and organize all at once.
24. What a magnetic idea
I love this idea. And if you can find a large enough magnet, think of how many things you could attach to it.
25. Wheelbarrow Rack
Things like wheelbarrows take up a ton of space, and I’m sure most of us would really like to park our cars in the garage if possible. This rack saves you the floor space.
26. Yard Tool Organizer
Such a simple way to organize your long-handled yard tools. All you need is two 1x4s that you make slots in to hang them from.
27. Ceiling storage rack
I can see why this is limited to four containers. This way, each labeled container is at the end. You don’t have to worry about needing to pull one out to get to something in the middle.
28. Corner shelves
Most of us have countless bottles, jars, and tins of stuff in the garage. This simple to do DIY project puts them all in one place at eye level.
29. More overhead storage
Create a rack to whatever size you need and store bulky items overhead. Camping equipment, your patio umbrella and more. The PVC piping might be a bit more work than some of the other projects, but well worth it.
30. Storage tubes
This one will take up some floor space, but it’s a great way to contain clutter. These are concrete forming tubes, and they are cheap. Strap a few to the wall, and you have a place for long handled yard tools and more.
31. Ball bin
Does your family play a lot of sports and have all the corresponding balls? How about corralling them in the garage? This is a simple frame outfitted with bungie cords and a few containers for smaller balls.
32. Recycling bin rack
I like this idea! So much better than having to crowd around the bins to get to my car. This easy project will get them up off the ground and out of the way.
33. DIY wall storage system
You can buy systems that are pretty and uniform, but they are expensive. Why not build something like this? You could even get creative. See how he’s used a planter to store gardening stuff?
34. Sliding shelves
Who says this type of pull out cupboard is only for the kitchen or pantry? And there’s even room for more storage on top.
35. Store lawn chairs
If you have foldup lawn chairs, forget about just resting them against the wall. A little bit of scrap lumber will be all you need to create hooks for them. Cheap and easy.
36. Not for everyone
Okay, you shouldn’t waste any available storage space, and that includes space up near the ceiling. But personally, I’m not interested in climbing up and down a ladder to get it.
37. Bike Storage
When winter comes, what do you do with the bikes? You can either hang them from the garage ceiling with simple bike hooks or use something like Cycle Glide system with hooks.
38. Build it tough!
If you went with an idea like this, it would have to be study. Some math and engineering would need to be included, because you would need to know how much weight those bottom steps/shelves could hold.
39. Used filing cabinets
You can find used file cabinets fairly cheap, so they could come in handy for garage storage. You could even convert one into a locker style by removing the drawers.
40. Make use of the rafters
We’ve already seen an idea using large tubes but here’s a twist on that idea. Fit large tubes between the rafters and clamp them in place. This one is even sectioned off.
