Our bodies change as we age. Especially our faces.
They become wrinkled and lined, our eyes hooded and droopier.
Some say the hell with it and let nature take its course.
Other head to the plastic surgeon to try and turn back the hands of time. Whether you’re happy with your older self or looking to retain your youthful look, there are some makeup tips older women can use that will give them a “mini eye lift” without any surgery.
Fabulous50s shares their five biggest makeup mistakes people use on mature eyes.
Mistake 1) Not Using Primer
Your eyelids produce more oil as you age.
Using a primer will help you get rid of some of that oil that causes your eye makeup to run or get stuck in the creases of your eye which looks heavy and cakey.
Using primer makes your eye shadow last longer and look more vivid on your eyes. You’ll want to apply a light amount and apply it in a tapping motion with your finger.
Mistake 2) Ignoring Color Theory
Color theory tells us that dark colors recede and light colors make things look larger. So you’ll want to make sure that you’re using dark and light colors in the right spots of your eyes. With mature eyes, you want to make the hood of your eye look smaller and the lid of your eyes large.
So, you’ll want to avoid using dark colors on your lid.
Instead, use the dark color on the crease of your eyelid to make the hood of your eye look smaller.
The lighter color should be placed on your eyelid.
You can also use a light-colored eyeliner on the waterline of your eye (the part of your lower eyelid that touches your eyeball) to make your eyes seem larger. Add this liner to the corner of your eyelids and then under your eyebrow.
Mistake 3) Following Nature With Your Eyeliner
Though your eye naturally points downward, you don’t want to follow that line with eyeliner.
It will make your eye look heavy and droopy.
Instead, pull your liner upward at the corner where the last eyelash is. Then bring your edge down so the end forms a little triangle. If you don’t have much space between your lid and your crease, then you’ll want your liner to be thinner. You can thicken it up if that space is a bit larger
For the bottom lid, you also want to avoid following your natural eye line.
Instead, create a gentle lift with your liner.
Give yourself a soft line by drawing over the part of your eye that droops with a straighter line and pulling your corner upward. Blend and soften with a neutral eye shadow.
Mistake 4) Go With Your Natural Browline
A well-shaped eyebrow will help create a perfect shape for your eyes and face. You can fake a well-shaped eyebrow with some tricks.
Take an eyebrow pencil place it between your nose and the corner of your eye. It should touch your brow. Make a mark. This is where your eyebrow should start.
Then take the pencil and put the bottom part on your nose and the top to the corner of your eye. That’s where your brow should end. Fill in the gaps with feathered strokes.
Mistake 5) Not Curling Your Eyelashes
Curling your eyelashes is a great way to give your eye a more youthful look.
That’s because it lifts your eye upward.
You can immediately tell the difference between a curled lash and an uncurled lash.
Clamp your eyelash and gently turn towards your inner eye and hold for 10 seconds.
Then pulse your clamp a bit. You can see how much more youthful her left eye looks than her right, which is the eye she used to demonstrate what NOT to do.
