Millions of people are unemployed right now due to the new coronavirus. In fact, the last count had more than 17 million people filing for unemployment. Countless individuals are furloughed and have no idea when they’ll return to work. Children are home from school and have no clue when they’ll be back in the classroom.
There’s so much uncertainty in the world right now. And people are finding themselves with a ridiculous amount of time on their hands. Some are enjoying the extra time and relaxing with a good book. Others are tackling those long-ignored projects around the house and outdoors. Then there’s a group of people that are passing the time by engaging in art projects, self-improvement endeavors and some of the craziest activities. Even better is that they’re sharing those on social media for all to see.

1. Literally climbing the walls
Imgur user DukeNukemsDick is tired of staring at four plain walls at his home. In his first week of lockdown, he joked that he’s climbing the walls. Truly! He cleverly built a climbing wall that he put up inside his actual home! It’s a great wall to exercise when it’s nervewracking to go outdoors during the coronavirus pandemic.
2. Neighborly concert
Dad James Underwood decided to treat his neighbors to the soothing sound of music during the coronavirus pandemic. He created a makeshift stage and his kids joined him as they sweetly strummed their instruments. It was surely relaxing and appreciated!
Reddit user Aprilshowers53 loves creating miniature settings. She spent four days of the lockdown creating an impressive tiny-scaled living room area. When she found out that her state will be shut through the end of April, she decided that she’d have an entire apartment block crafted by the time she’s able to break free.
4. When you can’t find t.p., make your own
Thanks to hoarders, toilet paper has been in big demand and short supply during the coronavirus pandemic. People line up all the way around stores before opening hour just to get their hands on coveted toilet paper. Consumers joke that they’d have to resort to the lonely unmatched socks if they can’t find more. Ed Mironiuk must have a terrific sense of humor because he used needlepoint to create his very own friendly looking roll of toilet paper.
You know you’re desperate for entertainment when, one Day 14 of the quarantine, you create a very cool picnic table for a squirrel that keeps popping into his garden area. Fernando Tepetate apparently is quite handy and the squirrel really seems to appreciate the luxury. Furniture for critters just might be a new thing!
6. Captain Cat to the rescue
Instead of the Cat in the Hat, we introduce to you the Cat in the Tank. Reditt user PheonixSsmus shared that this project took him all afternoon, but “I regret nothing.” The cat doesn’t seem to be impressed with his new set of wheels, but we find the creation pretty awesome. How funny is this!
7. Man’s best friend’s new digs
We can’t leave out the cool dogs of the world during the pandemic. Rusty’s owner renovated the space under the stairs to make him the coolest new house. Rusty has a wall lantern, his very own name sign above the door and even a wall planter! His mail slot cleverly has the shape of a bone on it. Rusty seems to be pretty smitten with his home inside a home.
While people have found themselves with plenty of time on their hands, imagine how bored a lot of the kids are, even those who have been keeping up with schoolwork with online learning. One mom mapped out geometric shapes on her window and handed her kids an array of washable markers. The kiddos created some very cool artwork that looks like stained glass.
9. Green thumb blossoms during quarantine
This reddit user definitely outdid himself. He tackled a big project during his first week of quarantine. He constructed an entire greenhouse with beds measuring 30 centimeters deep. There’s even workbenches not shown in the photo that he mixes potting soil and prunes his plants at. How impressive is this project!
When stuck at home during a quarantine, why not pick up a new hobby? Instagram user missliz_art apparently is a seasoned cross-stitcher and sells them. She definitely has plenty of time right now during the pandemic to whip some up.
11. Pandemic prank
Reddit user Rolling Thunderpants couldn’t believe what his daughter made. She created it with art materials and hot glue, then painted it. His daughter hid and waited until he found it. It’s pretty spooky!
McKay Coppins shared that the kids wanted to go to a movie, but during the coronavirus pandemic, it’s impossible to do that. So McKay made a movie theater setting at home with all the fixings. The kids even pitched in and helped!
13. Taking up woodworking
Imgur user THEbigSCHNOZZZ took a plain slab of wood with unfinished edges then sanded and stained it to create an incredible looking dining room table. The rough edges give it a rustic look while the varnished finish offers a polished feel. This person has talent!
14. Happy birthday!
Emily Torchia’s brother nailed a milestone during the quarantine – he turned the big 21! But there was no way he could go out clubbing and celebrate, so their parents of all people remodeled their garage into a temporary nightclub so that he could ring in his birthday in style. It wasn’t a night out on the town, but it was a pretty cool alternative.
15. Dinner is served
This family turned the tables on dinnertime and had the kids pretend to be the guests at a fancy restaurant complete with candlelight and the good dinnerware. Dad even dons a tuxedo and presents the evening’s drink selection: milk. We bet the kids will never forget this!

This Twitter user spent his time converting a catch-all corner of the basement into a fun party nook completely with a wet bar and neon lighting. He claimed in his tweet that there are “no excuses not to beverage during this lockdown.” He did a pretty good job!
Twitter user Mags Sanders wasn’t about to let the pandemic get in his way of socializing, even if it meant drinking alone. This person set up a fun and funky area perfect for drinking with a small group of friends, as long as it stayed with the “no more than 10 people” guidelines.
18. It’s all fun and games…
This is a very cool lockdown challenge! They set up a domino-style obstacle course all throughout the house. Watch and see if you can replicate it yourself!

When bored, take on a new project! You may have seen people take deceased loved ones’ shirts and make pillows out of them. This craft person took old school uniforms and used them as the pillow material. Some people joked that their memories of school didn’t deserve a pillow, but these are still neat!
20. The next best thing
When the lockdown prevents you from going to Nando’s for your birthday, your girlfriend swoops in with the save. Twitter user Empower Development couldn’t believe what she did. The pop machine is awfully clever and the surprise comes complete with menus. Hope the birthday was a good one!
21. Ahoy matey
Imgur user Captaincanucksleft has been passing the time in quarantine by creating a cool ship’s wheel out of oak. He showed off the different stages of creating it and commenters are pretty impressed. We are, too!
22. Six-foot social distancing
Taylor Neal is getting a kick out of the social distancing guidelines with a bit of tongue-in-cheek. He crafted what he calls the social distancing serving spoon. He’s also selling it for the same price as people’s stimulus check: $1,200 for an individual customer and $2,400 for married couples buying it. Each additional child in the house tacks on another $500 per spoon per kid.
23. Feline Olympics
If you’re wondering where the extra toilet paper and paper towels have gone, they’re being used as hurdles for cats at this pet owner’s house. Imgur user PauloMemeBeast decided to pass the time while quarantined during the pandemic to create a comical setup for his cats. They seem to be getting a kick out of it, too!
24. Picasso at work
When hibernating at home with the kids during a global pandemic, it may be hard to come up with a million creative ways to keep them engaged and having fun, balanced with a healthy dose of downtime and exercise. One mom used painter’s tape to map out geometric designs on the backyard fence and handed her kiddo sidewalk chalk. The end result is very cool!
25. Kidding around to relieve stress
Just because you’re a grownup doesn’t mean you can’t unwind in a kiddie way. Josh worried about the insane amount of stress his wife has been under as a doctor on the front line fighting the coronavirus pandemic. So he constructed a fort for her to relax in after work. How sweet!
26. Global impact
Instagram user faublehead passed part of his time during the quarantine by crafting a very neat looking globe. It’s mounted on the metal most globes are found on and is colorfully decorated. It’s the perfect addition to his desk!
27. Easter quarantine
What better way to pass the time during the quarantine that overlaps with Easter and springtime than to crochet a beautiful bunny.This little character definitely is cute and will make the perfect decoration!
28. Staying fit
Olivia Hall decided to convert a very cool brick garage space into her very own exercise room! She has a freestanding weight machine, plenty of kettleballs and hand weights. She used the spongy interlocking floor pieces for comfort. This is a great way to pass the time during the pandemic!
It took him two weeks, but Steve Cook finally did it! He created a 6’8 Megatron for part of a school project. It’s insane how he did this!
30. Creating Coraline
Character Coraline has come to life in a 6’4-tall image on canvas. Daune Jaimes Diaz spent part of the pandemic creating the image to be used as a Halloween decoration. It’s definitely eye-catching!
One of the establishments open in many states that are on lockdown during the coronavirus pandemic happens to be liquor stores. Imgur user DieHausParti1 took advantage of his downtime and built a bar in the garage. It’s pretty snazzy, too!
32. Now showing!
Another family desperately wanted movie time, so they converted their kitchen into a concession stand just like at the theater and had the movie projector playing on the wall. This is a perfect way to pass the time during the pandemic!

A school music teacher found himself with too much time on his hands. He constructed a musical instrument resembling a bagpipe out of three recorders, a trash bag and tape. He actually sounds really good!
After being in quarantine for too long, Reddit user Girhinomofe decided the refrigerator was bland and boring. It belonged to the previous owner and worked fine, but was colored ivory — something he couldn’t stand. So he cleverly wrapped it with matte black, matte white and matte rust-orange; painted the handles and lower grate; then added a dry-erase panel above the water and ice dispenser. He also built a blade guard for the knives on the side out of satin silver aluminum. Girhinomofe said it only took a couple of hours worth of work and didn’t cost much at all, but made a big impact on the visual appeal in the kitchen.
Another small-scale artist tackled recreating a library and the end result is quite impressive! The shelves upon shelves of books are unimaginably tiny and the two-story fireplace looks inviting. By the end of the quarantine, this artist just might have an entire house replicated.
When Disney shut down and countless vacations had to be canceled, dreams were crushed. But one Reddit user brought the magic of Disney into the home. For $349, this Disney castle consumed many hours of quarantine time to construct and looks great!
Idle hands may drive some people bonkers. This Reddit user loves to knit and had the time to crank out this beautiful shift. Others commented how pretty the colors are and how well they mesh together.
One fun way to pass the time is to create a terrarium. It can have an array of plants mixed with rocks, and can even accommodate some living creatures including this snail. The creator shared that the items used to make the terrarium were found in the backyard, so no extra money was spent nor did anyone have to pop into a store.
Apartment dwellers usually don’t have access to suitable enough space for a big garden. But this person created an ingenious way to green up the indoors. By staggering painted white shelves mounted at various heights on a wall, this quarantine project is visually appealing and healthy, too!
ThatBuilderDude took time out of his quarantine seclusion to craft a gorgeous shiplap headboard for his bedroom. Commentors appreciated how he matched the lines of the headboard with the lines on the wall. He plans to tackle nightstands next.
When one man’s wife began working from home during the quarantine, he kindly crafted a space-saving desk unit for her. The ladder desk with shelves offers ample space and for safety’s sake is mounted to the wall. One man’s comment was classic: “I swear to God if my wife sees the quarantine desks y’all are making for your wives she’ll leave me. My wife is working on basically what looks like an old laundry drying rack with a glass shower door on it.”
Reddit user carmacae wanted to learn to knit and finally found the time during the coronavirus quarantine. The project she most wanted to tackle was to recreate Harry and Ron’s sweaters. And she did!
When you can’t go outside and shop nor stand within six feet of someone, then you might as well create your own town where people are popping in and out of stores and hanging out. This creator took several different LEGO sets and assembled a streetscape with plans to add details such as figs, trees, trashcans and more.
One particular wedding photo stood out for Reddit user wedding1119, so she had a paint-by-number generated from it. With plenty of time on her hands during the quarantine, she was able to finish this piece of art. The details are terrific and what a great keepsake!
Since only immediate family can be with your during the quarantine, unless you’re an essential worker, you might as well invite the Force into your home. This Reddit user tackled a mosaic artwork on the wall of a Storm Trooper and it’s incredible! This person obviously is a big Star Wars fan judging from the other creations nearby.
When you have time on your hands and a sports car you want to ramp up, this car enthuasist vinyl wrapped his car in bright blue and hot pink. Some people didn’t like his headlights, but he didn’t care. He had the time and money and decked out his car the way he wanted to.
When you can’t find the puzzle you really want to tackle during the quarantine, why not make your own? Reddit user jaybird0114 received some input from his dad and grandpa, but created a wooden puzzle in the shape of fire. Then he painted it colorfully.
While quarantined with his wife, this handy guy built beautiful wooden planters with lattice attached. These are perfect for vines and other climbing plants.
Some people are cleverly finding a way to 3D print personal protective equipment, particularly face masks, for essential employees like healthcare workers on the front line. This guy used his 3D printer to create a custom center console for his VHF and CB radios. The technology behind 3D printers is amazing!
This dad decided to create and construct snow-capped mountains as a bookcase for his son. He used simple pine board and textured white paint for the snow. Even better than how they turned out is how much his son loved them.
