Why not keep a spare house key and/or car key in an area that could save the day? Attaching your key to your car’s license plate means it will always be in reach if you need a spare. Just use one of the license plate screws to attach it behind the plate where no one will be able to see it. Only you will know it’s there.

Hide your key under a rock in your backyard. No one will know it’s there, and putting it under a rock in the backyard instead of the front yard is more secure. Use masking tape to secure the key to the rock to make sure it doesn’t fall off. Or, you can even buy a fake rock that lets you place your key inside the fake rock.

Use a Pill Bottle

You can also place your spare key inside of a pill bottle and then glue the bottle top to the underside of a rock. This not only ensures that the key stays clean and dry inside the pill bottle, but it’s a bit more secure than leaving the key exposed under a rock.

If you tend to mix up your keys, this hack could help you from grabbing the wrong key when you’re in a hurry. You’ll need to get some glue and colorful string, which will differentiate each key. Put a little bit of glue on the key and then wind up the string around the glue on the key. Then you can identify each key by the color of the string you use.

Use Nail Polish

Instead of using colored string on your keys, you can do the same but with nail polish. Paint the top of each key with different-colored nail polish so you can easily identify each key by color.

These hacks can help you around the house in a pinch:

  • If your lock gets frozen at the height of winter, apply some hand sanitizer on the lock. Then slip your key in.
  • If your curtains constantly get blown around by either airflow through an open window or from an air vent, attach an old key you don’t use anymore to the bottom of the curtains. The weight of the key will help keep the curtain from blowing around.
