Jeff and Missy Miller were trying to plan a vacation for their family, but they faced the same problem when they called every hotel – they’re party was too large. The couple didn’t want to spend money on multiple rooms, so they started to brainstorm.
The Millers came up with the idea of doing a bus conversion and soon purchased a Blue Bird International school bus. Now, they just had one mission – make it a comfy place for them and their 7 seven children. Yep – 7 kids!
The family opted for a white and red color scheme for the exterior of their vacation home. They endearingly named their new home-on-wheels “Discovering US Bus,” which is a play on words for ‘us’ as in family, and ‘US’ as in United States.
Climb up the bus’ stairs and enter the family’s living room and seating area.
Two comfy sofas sit on either side of the bus, both of them double as Jeff and Missy’s beds as well.
Jeff’s bed sits under the family’s pantry shelf. Of course, in an area this small with so many people, it’s important to have multi-use space.
“Under Jeff’s bed, we have our linen closet and some extra food storage,” Missy says on her family’s blog.
It makes sense that Missy’s bed would also have storage underneath. With a family this size, they need all the space they can get!
“Under my bed, is extra homeschooling books that would not fit on the shelf and more extra food storage. When we are traveling from one place to the other, our beds become the couch,” she elaborates.
The kitchen is small, but they make use of every inch of space.
Their mobile vacation home features a microwave, sink, a bit of counter space, and as many shelves that they could possibly fit. The family has stayed on the bus for three months and haven’t found an item that they are missing.
A refrigerator sits on the opposite side of the kitchen with even more shelving up above.
“Above the refrigerator is a shelf where we keep items that children do not need to reach, such as extra medicine, batteries, sewing and fingernail boxes. I am constantly amazed at the storage we have on the bus.”
The small bathroom is located behind the door to the sleeping bunks, just past the fridge.
The bathroom is teeny tiny, but really, how much time are you spending in there? There is a toilet, a couple of shelves for toiletries, and it even serves as a closet for clothing.
Walk down the hall and enter the kids’ bunk bed area.
Two kids sleep on the right, and two kids sleep on the left. The red curtain in the back divides the “boys area” from the “girls area.” However, one of the Miller girls sleeps in the “boys area,” she changes in the back.
In the rear of the bus is where three more of the girls sleep and keep their belongings.
“Sierra’s bunk area is on the left. Above her bed is her closet, dresser, and desk. She has the most stuff of any one person on the bus. TEENAGERS AND THEIR STUFF! She stores her clothes bag under her bed. The white chest stores clothes for Hannah, Katie, and Melissa,” Missy says.
