Who couldn’t use more counter space in their kitchen?

It seems like no matter how much you have, you always need more. Instead of doing a massive kitchen remodel and trying to fit in more counters, why not build a stove top cover that can double as counter space and a serving tray.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money or know a lot about woodworking to create a stovetop cover that looks good and serves a purpose.

All you need are a few simple tools, a little bit of wood, and the desire to build something useful. Here’s how to build your own stovetop cover.

Supplies:

  • Tape Measure
  • Pencil

Directions:

Step 1: Measure the stovetop. You will need to measure the length, width, and height. You can make the cover as high as you want, but it’s a good idea to measure so you know it will be higher than the burners and sit on top of the stove properly.

Step 2: Cut the wood. If you have your measurements, you may be able to have your local lumber yard cut the wood for you. You will need boards for the sides and a piece of plywood or several thin boards for the top.

Step 3: Use a brush to apply the stain to the wood. Stain the front, back, and sides of each piece and allow them to dry thoroughly.

Step 4: Use the small boards to make the frame of the cover. Use wood glue to hold the frame together while you drill screws into it to secure it.

Step 5: Fit the top piece onto the frame using wood glue. You can also use screws to secure it, but if you don’t want the screw to show, it’s best to just use the wood glue.

Step 6: Mark on the side where you want to put your handles.

Step 7: Flip the cover over and drill screw holes from the inside to the outside of the frame for the handles.

Step 8: Attach the handles and flip the cover back over.

Step 9: If you want to protect the cover from grease splatters and other spills, you can give it a coat of polyurethane. Remember to tape your handles if you decide to do this to avoid getting it on them.

Step 10: Position your cover on your stove. You can decorate it or use it to prepare food. You can also pick it up and carry it into other rooms as a serving tray.

Creating a stovetop cover will give you plenty of space to make things in your kitchen.

No more stacking things and moving them constantly. When you aren’t using your stovetop, the burners are just in the way. This allows you to make the most of the space you already have. Some of the ways you can use your new stovetop cover include:

  • Rolling out dough for cookies or pizza
  • Cutting noodles
  • Slicing bread
  • Preparation station
  • Toppings bar for ice cream or tacos
  • Decorations

If the lack of space constantly frustrates you, you can’t enjoy your time cooking and baking. When you make this simple and affordable stovetop cover, you will love being in your kitchen again.

Before you head off to the store to buy an expensive tray that probably won’t fit on your stove or match your décor, consider making your own. You can choose how it looks and make sure it fits. You might even have some fun making it.
