Most kids have a hobby, something they like to do that’s special to them. Some kids choose to make money as art dealers as their hobby.
Antiques Roadshow on PBS interviewed what they said is their youngest collector yet and appraised one of his antique finds.
“We met one of our youngest up-and-coming collectors at the appraisal table in Richmond! Did this boy’s investment get a big return?” the caption of the YouTube video of the interview reads.
The young man told the appraiser that he loved to collect glass, sterling silver, and art. The best thing he’s ever collected was a beautiful silver tray, which he found at a local auction.
But the boy’s favorite part of the antique game is getting to make money.
“I like to sell it online,” he told the appraiser.
“So, you like to buy and sell things,” the appraiser said.
“Big time!” the boy exclaimed.
The boy then explains how he’s waiting until September to sell his silver.
“Because the price fluctuates, so you keep up when silver is up and when it’s,” the auctioneer says.
“Uh, huh,” the boy replies.
The piece he is getting appraised, however, is a piece of art.
“This piece was found in an auction in South Jersey,” the boy explains. “It was hot there and my dad didn’t want to stay to get it but I wanted it, so we waited an hour or so.We got it for $2 bucks. I thought it was a watercolor but we couldn’t tell.”
The appraiser then explained that the painting is indeed a watercolor by Dutch painter Albert Neuhuys.
“He was one of the Dutch painters. He was born in 1844 and died in 1914,” he said. “I think you’re watercolor was probably done in the last quarter of the 19th century. He’s from Holland where there are a lot of good painters from this time working.”
Many families during the time would have portraits of a mother and one or two of her children painted.
The boy guessed that his find would be worth $150.
His face completely fell when the appraiser told him that it was worth between $1,000 and $1,500.
“Whoaaaa,” the boys says making a “my mind is blown” gesture.
“I think you got a great career going as an art dealer,” the appraiser tells him.
“I know, I think I’m gonna be rich!” he says confidently.
