The weather is warming up which mean we’ll start to see those unwanted house guests… bugs. Not only is it icky to see ants in your home, but some of these ants can actually do damage and invade your sanitary space.

Ants are attracted to sweet smells and love sugary foods.

So, the number one way to avoid having ants in your home is to make sure you don’t leave food out on the table, cupboards, and countertops. Make sure you sweep up and vacuum crumbs on the floor, and change your garbage often.

Sometimes that’s not enough and you have to take extra measures. But who wants to have to fill their home with noxious chemicals just to get rid of them? Well, you don’t have to.

Here are some natural remedies to get rid of ants:

1) Food-Grade Diatomaceous Earth

Food-grade diatomaceous earth (DE) is fossilized marine phytoplankton remains that are powered. It’s sharp edges cut through the exoskeletons of ants and dry them out and kill them. You can sprinkle this stuff where ants enter and hang out in your home like windowsills, under the refrigerator and cabinets, near the garbage and other areas. Leave a thin layer once a day until they are gone.

2)B0rax

Mix one teaspoon of borax, 2 teaspoons of peanut butter, 2 tablespoons of sugar, and 1 teaspoon of water. Pour the mixture into a container and poke holes into the container. The ants will be attracted to the sweet smells of the sugar and peanut butter and will climb into the container to get it. They will bring it back to the home and share it with the other ants. The borax will eventually kill them.

3)Vinegar

Get a spray bottle and pour in equal parts of water and distilled vinegar along with a few drops of lemon essential oil. Shake it up and spray in places where ants accumulate and enter your home. They hate the smell of vinegar and will avoid it.

4) Cinnamon

Take a half of a teaspoon of cinnamon essential oil and mix it in with a cup of water. Wet a cotton ball with the mixture and swab areas where you’ve seen ants every day. Ant can’t stand the smell of it and will avoid it. You can also place cinnamon cloves in areas, like windows and doors, to prevent the ants from coming into your home.

Ants also hate peppermint because it prevents them from being able to smell other smells. Pour 10 drops of peppermint essential oil in a spray bottle filled with a cup of water. Spray this mixture twice daily to repel ants. Another alternative is sprinkling dried peppermint around your home, garbage areas, doors, entryways, or in your garden.
