When most people think of barns, they probably think of chickens, goats, and bails of hay, not a comfortable and luxurious living space. But then again, most people haven’t seen this barn.
Homeowners of a beautiful property outside of Jackson, Wyoming wanted to expand their living space and create a guest house and gym. They had always admired barns and decided to draw inspiration from them to design and build this rustic but modern structure.
“Whenever my husband and I drive by one, we comment on it — and a barn felt much more interesting and original than a regular guest house,” the homeowner told Big Life Magazine.
The couple hired a friend and architect, John Carney of Carney Logan Burke Architects, to design and build their home.
What he created was quite the masterpiece. Even though it’s a barn, it’s far from lacking all of the modern amenities of today.
The second floor of the classically shaped barn house would traditionally be a hayloft.
“The whole thing is proportioned to look like a loft hay-loading space as if it were big double doors you brought hay into,” explains Carney.
The upstairs gym is perfect for year-round use for the homeowners and their guests. Plus, the view isn’t all that bad either, looking out on the Grand Teton mountains.
The beams and different shades of wood give the barn its rustic feel. The metal work, railings, and lines bring the structure into the modern era.
The large open space leads into the main guest bedroom. There is a small kitchenette for light cooking.
The interior was designed by WRJ Design Associates; they perfectly mixed old and modern elements throughout the guest home.
The large bedroom has light colors that provide a gorgeous contrast with the wood. The large windows let in plenty of natural light.
Downstairs, there is a garage that houses the homeowner’s collection of vintage cars, bicycles, and motorcycles.
The beautiful, rustic wood is used throughout the home, including in the garage, keeping the barn-feel flowing through every room.
The barn is located about 40-feet up the driveway from their main house. A view from the outside shows just how gorgeous the structure really is.
“You know what I love about this house?” the homeowner asked. “When you drive into the driveway you think, what a beautiful, rustic barn, and you expect everything inside to be cozy and a little old-fashioned. But then you walk in and think, ‘Wow! Everything inside is clean and modern, with these killer floor-to-ceiling mountain views.’ It’s contemporary and fresh.”
When you see a gorgeous structure such as this one, it suddenly gives barn-living a whole new meaning.
