8 Best Mattress Protectors of 2024: Cooling, Waterproof, and Quiet

Mattress protectors are a must for anyone who doesn’t want their mattress covered in mystery stains after a year of sleep. Truth be told, though, not all mattress protectors do the same thing, and not all of them are even safe for regular use! The best mattress protectors do a few things right and don’t just protect the mattress from stains; they’re also quiet, made with premium materials, and comfortable.

To rank our choices, we’ve bought and tested each of the mattress protectors and reviewed them according to:

  1. Stain Resistance and Waterproofing (Wine Test)
  2. Comfort and Sound
  3. Fit

Regarding the science of protecting a mattress, the most important things are the materials used and the overall fit. It’s important to note that not all mattress protectors are waterproof, and the ones that usually fall into two categories of chemicals:

    • TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane)
    • PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride)

TPU is generally a better option because it has a cleaner manufacturing process. PVC is very common, but it’s known for its negative environmental impact and potential safety issues, especially with long-term use.

Additionally, most mattresses are made of either bamboo, polyester, or cotton. Bamboo and cotton are natural fibers, with bamboo being the softest and generally most cooling of the two. Polyester is generally cheaper and can offer more stain resistance, but is rougher and not a naturally derived fiber.

Here are our picks for the Best Mattress Protectors of 2024!

The Bottom Line

Wine Test Results: PASSED

The Dosaze is easily the most waterproof on our list. After testing, there were no stains and no penetration, showing its 100% waterproof mattress protector claim to be the truth!

Overall, the best and most comfortable waterproof mattress protector we reviewed was the Dosaze.

To start, we found that the Dosaze did everything really well, without “overinvesting” into one area at the cost of another. For example, the Dosaze was a truly 100% waterproof option that did have that slightly ‘waterproof’ coating feel to it, but we found that it was still extremely comfortable and quiet. Other options we tested tended to lean too heavily into one benefit and forsake the rest. The Avocado comes to mind as probably the most comfortable mattress topper of them all, but it is absorbent (the opposite of waterproof). One spill, and it’s toast (Avocado toast?).

On top of being waterproof and comfortable, we also found the materials of the Dosaze to be fantastic and high-quality without costing an arm and a leg. The primary material is bamboo (theirs is known as Glacier-Pro), which helps act as a cooling agent, while the silver-infused fabric keeps things soft and silent. On top of that, Dosaze opted for TPU instead of PVC—you can sleep easily regarding safety and environmental concerns.

Great materials, reasonable price, (actually) waterproof, and comfortable? Check!

The Bottom Line

Wine Test Results: PASSED

The Purple passed the wine test, but not without taking stains. Since it has a two-layered construction, this resulted in the first layer absorbing the wine, while the second layer repelled it. It’s likely stained for life, although it did totally repel the wine from the mattress.

The Purple Mattress Protector was a great runner-up that also hit all of the main points (waterproof, relatively quiet, and good material choice); it was just a little more expensive, on average, than the Dosaze for marginally more benefits.

The Purple’s main “feature” that it markets is how stretchy it is. Their main claim is primarily that they want to “preserve the comfort of the mattress” you already own, and the super-thin stretchy material helps to do that. This thinness does help reduce the crinkly, plasticky feel everyone hates, although it does have a slightly plasticky hand feel, likely due to the TPU (great!) coating. There is a noticeable difference, however, when compared to the softer bamboo construction of the Dosaze, as the Purple has a rougher polyester construction.

The Bottom Line

Wine Test Results: PASSED

When tested, the wine Immediately soaked in, the fastest of any tested (it was honestly pretty cool to watch). This means a few things. First, there was no spread since it didn’t bead and roll around, but it also meant that its soft outer layer was permanently stained. No penetration occurred through the second layer, however.

The Slumber Cloud is a fantastic mattress protector; it just doesn’t necessarily align with the cost-value of either the Dosaze or the Purple. That being said, if you have some extra money to spend on a mattress protector, the Slumber Cloud Core Mattress Protector has some great features.

To start, this protector is thicker but not plush like the Avodaco or Buffy. The weight of the Slumber Cloud does make this topper feel a little more luxurious, but it also helps to hide the waterproof layer. Essentially, this mattress protector doesn’t feel plasticky or crinkly like its thinner counterparts while also making it more durable. Additionally, Slumber Cloud is famous for its NASA-engineered materials, which they claim help cool your body.

Slumber Cloud does offer some other options in a similar vein (three different versions of mattress pads), but the Core is the thinnest of the bunch and closer to what most would consider a “traditional” mattress protector.

PROS

CONS

The Bottom Line

Wine Test Result: FAILED

When tested, the Buffy absorbed the wine but didn’t offer any stain protection or water resistance. Its thickness helped, but only by way of the volume of wine it was able to absorb.

What’s a “thick” pick? Well, a few of the mattress toppers we reviewed weren’t just about protecting the mattress; they also attempted to provide extra loft and comfort. For some customers, this isn’t a good thing as they want to feel the expensive mattress that they are trying to protect in the first place.

That being said, some people do prefer the added comfort of a thicker mattress protector, and for us, the Buffy Plushy Mattress Protector was the best. In our testing, the Buffy did the best job of straddling the line of waterproof protector/comfortable pad. Even their website’s description for the product says, “Up your bed’s bounce-factor with this plush protector”!

The Plushy uses a Lyocell fabric, which is a synthetic substitute for cotton or silk. This does give it some water-resistant properties, but it’s more absorbent than any other option so far. The Buffy really isn’t designed for legit spills or anything, but could help protect the mattress underneath when they do happen.

CONS

The Bottom Line

Wine Test Results: PASSED

The Naturepedic absorbed the wine into its outer cotton layer but did have a waterproofing layer that stopped anything from reaching the mattress. The cotton is likely stained, but nothing made it through the second layer.

If organic materials are important to you as a customer, the Naturepedic Organic Waterproof Mattress Protector is probably your best bet. Regarding materials, this protector is made with organic cotton (GOTS-Certified) and is listed as waterproof.

The only hesitation that we have is that there is almost no information on the other materials that were used to create this mattress protector. Sure, we know that it uses organic cotton, but it doesn’t have any information online regarding the type of material that is used for its waterproofing. Its listing claims that it doesn’t use PVCs, PFCs, or butane rubber, but it never says what it uses as the waterproof layer, something that it has to have since cotton isn’t waterproof in the slightest.

Keep in mind that the cotton isn’t stain-resistant at all, even if it does have a waterproof layer. We would view the Naturepedic as an affordable and less-plush alternative to the expensive and fluffy Avocado, but with actual waterproofing.

The Bottom Line

Wine Test Results: PASSED

Like the Naturepedic and Slumber Cloud, the wine made it into the first layer but was stopped by a secondary waterproof layer. It didn’t fully penetrate but was likely ruined, especially since the cotton is bright white.

The Saatva has a few issues that we found with it. First, it isn’t stain-resistant since it has a cotton construction. Second, the cotton they use is extremely coarse. Like, Levi’s jeans coarse. We are relatively certain that this would soften over time, but for those first few weeks, it could be a rather stiff experience.

There isn’t a plasticky feel, but the thickness of the cotton does make it feel almost like a canvas bag, something we weren’t too fond of. On top of it all, it is an extremely expensive option, one of the priciest on our list, and we didn’t feel that it was comfortable enough to warrant such a price.

To give it some props, it is extremely well-constructed and sourced with great materials; we just didn’t love how it felt and the fact that it would invariably get stained, potentially ruining a very expensive protector.

The Bottom Line

Wine Test Result: FAILED

The Avocado didn’t pass the wine test in any sense of the word. After a spill, it soaked through and immediately dripped under the material. Even a minor spill would likely result in a ruined mattress.

The Avocado was probably the most interesting item that we tested. First, it was extremely comfortable, and we loved that. Second, and probably most notably, this mattress protector is not waterproof… and it doesn’t even try to be. In fact, it even markets itself as “super absorbent”, which isn’t usually how we would like to imagine our mattress protectors.

The Avocado was definitely on the higher end of the list, too. In fact, this is the most expensive product we tested and over 3x the price of the Dosaze and Purple. This mainly comes down to the handmade GOTS-Certified cotton build, and we can say, without a doubt, that this is a luxury item that leans into “purity” more than it does cutting-edge technology.

That being said, this mattress protector is bound to get ruined. It isn’t stain-resistant, and it’s going to absorb sweat, skin oil, and all sorts of accidents (it even says so on the website). For a mattress protector that is so expensive, we would like to see some practical technology that isn’t just an expensive and absorbent buffer between us and our mattress.

It is quite comfy, however.

The Bottom Line

Wine Test Result: PASSED

The Linenspa is water resistant and didn’t allow anything through, but it did have minor staining. It wasn’t “full” absorption like many of the other two-layer constructed options, but it is minorly stained. Still, it ranked higher in protection than many of the others.

The Linenspa Mattress Encasement is what we could call a cheap, run-of-the-mill mattress cover. It’s extremely cheap, made of polyester, and has the classic plasticky feel that most people expect with these sorts of things.

The ideal use-case for a product like this probably isn’t an adult looking to preserve their mattress investment from the occasional spill and aging. Instead, the Linenspa is best used for children who are learning where to go to the bathroom or adults looking for some assistance with incontinence. Or possibly those with rental properties (Airbnb and whatnot) with lots of guest turnover.

The Linenspa is easily washed and is cheaply replaced, but you aren’t going to get much comfort or quiet out of this mattress protector. As far as our testing goals were, this option didn’t quite hit the mark, but we can totally see where something like this could be useful (we just didn’t fall into that niche).
