In-Depth Review And Process
For a long time, I didn’t use a mattress protector. However, I soon learned my lesson: a mattress protector is a relatively cost-effective method for protecting a relatively large investment (your mattress!). It can really extend the life of your mattress, which is hard to clean once you get it.
I never really thought too much about which mattress protector to purchase at first. I just bought whatever was available online. However, I soon learned another lesson: it’s important to get the right mattress protector. First, you want to make sure that it is made of high-quality materials (and that it isn’t toxic). You always want to make sure that it is fully waterproof and will stay waterproof after multiple washes. In addition, you want to make sure that it isn’t loud and crinkly.
I’d purchased cheaper, plasticky mattress protectors. While these are waterproof, they definitely detract from your sleeping experience. You can hear them crinkle while you sleep, and sometimes they bunch up under your sheets. These mattress protectors are a definite no-go in my book because while you want to protect your mattress, you definitely don’t want your protector to negatively impact your sleep experience.
I finally set out to find the best mattress protector available on the market today. I started by scouring the internet and reading hundreds (if not thousands) of reviews. I finally narrowed it down to a list of 8-10 mattress protectors to actually test. I purchased all of these mattress protectors and evaluated them according to these metrics:
-
-
- Waterproofing
- Noise
- Temperature regulation and overall feel
- Return policy/warranty
- Value

Things to look for
Temperature regulation – look for a breathable fabric (like bamboo or tencel)
100% waterproof, and tested against wash cycles – the worst thing you can do is get a mattress protector that isn’t waterproof or whose waterproof feature wears out over time. Make sure you look for a fully waterproof mattress protector and read the reviews to see if it lasts. A big issue I encountered was that a lot of mattress protectors are water-resistant or are waterproof for a while, but do not last. Great mattress protectors often offer a long warranty because the brand’s have confidence knowing they will stand the test of time
Softness and comfort – you want a mattress protector that is soft. While mattress protectors generally will not be as soft as sheets (that’s what sheets are for!), but you want one that isn’t loud and crinkly (ahem, polyester).
Hypoallergenic and anti-bacterial – look for a mattress protector that is hypoallergenic and anti-bacterial to resist bacteria that might grow on it
Things to avoid
Flame retardant – while a flame retardant sounds like a benefit, it might actually do more harm than good. Some flame retardants contain chemicals that are detrimental to your health, according to multiple studies (1), (2). UK fire safety regulations (BS 7177) already require your mattress to meet strict flammability standards, so it’s probably not necessary to have a flame retardant mattress protector. If you want to have a flame retardant mattress protector, make sure you do your research so you know the chemicals used in the one you get are safe.
Loud, crinkly fabrics – make sure you read the reviews and get feedback on how loud/quiet the protector is. While many companies claim that the fabric is ‘quiet’ you only really know once you try it.
Is It Worth It to Consider Mattress Protectors Under £40?
I personally do not think it is best to consider the options under £40. You will likely save money in the long run because the manufacturers of mattress protectors tend to cut corners – these protectors also generally do not last as long. If you get the right mattress protector (even if it is more expensive), you’ll likely save money in the long run.
As an example, some mattress protectors tend to use lower quality materials (like polyester and plastic), which overheats, is less durable, and doesn’t feel as nice. Others might start out waterproof, but will lose that effect over time. These materials cost less, but you can definitely tell based on how they feel and sound.
It is worth it to invest in a higher quality mattress protector – especially when you consider how much a mattress protector can extend the life of your mattress. The right mattress protector can extend the life of your mattress by years. It can even enhance your sleeping experience for that time.

This waterproof mattress protector from Dosaze is made of a silver-infused 70% bamboo and 30% cotton fabric blend to ensure users’ comfort. It’s also treated with an anti-stain repellent solution and finished with a truly waterproof lining. The bamboo/cotton combination is actually comfortable enough to sleep on, in our opinion (though added sheets are recommended!) and and is not loud or scratchy in any way (like a lot of other waterproof mattress protectors are). It has complete moisture protection to make sure no forms of liquids can get to your mattress.
We’re confident when we say that this waterproof mattress protector not only protects your mattress investment, but it actually enhances your sleeping experience. In all of our testing, it definitely performed the best. This bed protector was waterproof after multiple washes, was not noisy, and was even comfortable enough to sleep on (without sheets).
The Dosaze Cooling Mattress Protector doesn’t just look great; it fits most beds really well, too. It’s really a great bed protector.
Pros:
-
-
- Nice and soothing feel — soft enough to sleep on in my opinion! (but I recommend using sheets as well)
- Temperature regulating
- Made of a bamboo blend fabric, so it is breathable and soft
- Lasts for years and years (comes with 10-year warranty)
- Not loud or crinkly in any way
- Can fit mattresses up to 38cm in depth
- Machine washable
- Actually waterproof (see video below) – waterproofing nature survives multiple washes easily
-
Cons:
-
-
- Only available online

You can see that this mattress protector not only provides top-notch support, but can also regulate your temperature and improve your sleep overall. It’s definitely one you want to consider purchasing!
UPDATE (3 months later!): I’ve been sleeping on this mattress protector for three months now, and it is still the best one. I just actually spilled some coffee on my bed, but thankfully, I had my mattress protector and it is still 100% waterproof (even after multiple washes).

The Panda Bamboo Mattress Protector is a UK-made bamboo mattress protector with a “Nano TPU” waterproof membrane underneath. The top layer is 70% bamboo and 30% cotton, which is a similar blend to the Dosaze. We found this mattress protector to be genuinely waterproof. We poured coffee onto layered sheets and nothing seeped through to the bottom layer, and a single 40C wash removed all staining from the protector itself.
The fabric feels silky and smooth. No crinkling, no plasticky sensation. I also found that this mattress protector kept me slightly cooler than usual, which is a real plus for a waterproof mattress protector. A lot of waterproof options trap heat because of the membrane, but the bamboo does a decent job here.
At around £37 for a double, this is good value for a waterproof bamboo mattress protector. The 32cm skirt stretches to fit deeper mattresses, and it comes in a wide range of UK sizes including Super King. Our biggest issue is the guarantee, which is only 1 year, and the trial period is 30 nights (compared to 60 from Dosaze). If you want a solid waterproof bamboo mattress protector at a competitive price, this is one of the better options out there.

Emma is one of the most well-known sleep brands in the UK, and their waterproof mattress protector does the job. A polyurethane film on the back blocks liquid completely. We poured coffee directly onto this mattress protector and nothing got through to the bedding underneath. A single 40C wash got rid of all staining.
This mattress protector is extremely thin. You genuinely forget it’s there, which I think is a good quality for a protector to have. It stays put with an elasticated strap and doesn’t bunch or shift. It’s also totally silent, which is great.
Our biggest issue with this mattress protector is the material and the price. At around £74 for a double, this is expensive for a 100% polyester mattress protector. The Panda above costs half as much and uses bamboo. Emma does include “AllergyShield” technology for dust mite sufferers, which is a nice touch, but the 25cm skirt depth is a real limitation. If your mattress is over 28cm deep, this simply won’t fit properly. Emma also only offers a 14-night return window, which I think is too tight for something you need to sleep on for a few weeks to really evaluate.

I’ll be honest, the Simba is a really lovely mattress protector to sleep on. The 200-thread-count cotton with quilted cotton fill feels great, and it adds a gentle layer of softness to your mattress. It’s completely silent. You’d never know it was there except for the added comfort.
The problem is that this mattress protector is NOT waterproof. Simba includes a polypropylene lining that provides some moisture resistance, but in our testing, liquid seeped through within about two minutes. If you spill something on your bed, this mattress protector is not going to save your mattress.
At £129 for a double (and £169 for a super king), this is one of the most expensive mattress protectors we tested, and it doesn’t deliver the core function that most people buy a mattress protector for. There’s no trial period either, just a 14-day return window if the packaging is intact. The 40cm skirt depth is generous, and the anti-dust-mite treatment is a nice bonus. But if waterproofing matters to you at all, I would look elsewhere. For the price, I think you could do much better.

Silentnight is a household name in the UK, and this is their entry-level waterproof mattress protector. At around £22 for a double, it’s by far the cheapest mattress protector on this list. For that price, you get four layers including a double-sided polypropylene waterproof backing that genuinely works.
The quilted microfibre surface is soft enough, and most reviewers say it doesn’t make noise. I found that it’s not as plush or breathable as bamboo or cotton alternatives, and you’ll notice it gets warmer than the premium options during the night. The 30cm fitted skirt is adequate for standard mattresses but won’t accommodate anything deeper.
I think this is a decent mattress protector if you’re on a budget or need something quickly from your local Argos. It does the basics well. But the materials are basic too, and you can definitely feel the difference compared to the Dosaze or the Panda. If your priority is protecting your mattress without spending much, this mattress protector will do the job. If you want something that actually improves your sleep, you’ll want to spend a bit more.

OTTY is best known for their hybrid mattresses, and their waterproof mattress protector is a decent product. The quilted microfibre adds genuine plushness to your bed, and you can actually feel the extra padding, which is a nice touch that most mattress protectors don’t offer.
We found the waterproofing to be excellent. We poured water onto the surface and it sat there without penetrating. Coffee and wine also failed to get through. The elasticated corners held firm on a deep mattress with a topper, and there was no bunching or wrinkling.
The 100-night trial is generous, and the 35cm skirt fits thicker mattresses comfortably. Where this mattress protector falls short is the price. At around £90 for a double, you’re paying a premium for microfibre rather than natural materials. The Dosaze is similarly priced but uses bamboo, which breathes better and feels cooler. A lot of reviewers (including me) found that OTTY’s mattress protector is breathable enough that you won’t overheat, but it doesn’t actively cool you the way bamboo does.

This is the most luxurious mattress protector on this list, and Woolroom charges accordingly. The filling is 250gsm traceable British wool inside an unbleached organic cotton shell. The waterproof layer uses a TPU coating on organic cotton.
I will say that the wool makes a real difference when it comes to temperature. Woolroom claims this mattress protector reduces heat from memory foam mattresses by up to 70%, and while I can’t verify that exact number, I did notice it slept cooler than anything synthetic on this list. It’s also the only mattress protector here that’s Allergy UK certified, which is worth knowing if allergies are a concern.
The problems are practical. At over £210 for a double (and £265 for a super king), this mattress protector costs more than some mattress toppers. You can’t tumble dry it. You need wool-specific detergent. Machine washing is limited to 40C on a delicate wool cycle. If you have kids or pets and need to wash frequently, the care requirements become a real burden. The waterproofing works, but it’s the TPU layer doing the work, not the wool itself. For the price, you’re mostly paying for the temperature regulation and the natural materials.

TEMPUR is probably the biggest name in sleep, and their Tencel mattress protector has some clever technology behind it. The Tencel fibres wick moisture while THERMIC microcapsules absorb and release heat to keep your skin temperature between 28 and 30C. The PERLAM waterproof layer blocks spills without the plasticky feel you get from cheaper mattress protectors.
We found that coffee, wine, and water all failed to penetrate this mattress protector. It was completely silent and cool to the touch throughout the night. I honestly didn’t really know it was there, which is exactly what you want from a good mattress protector.
TEMPUR markets this as a 2-in-1 (mattress protector and fitted sheet), but realistically I think most people will still use a sheet over it. The fit runs a bit generous, which means some minor creasing on certain mattresses. The 3-year guarantee is the best on this list, and the 60C wash temperature is useful if you need to sanitise regularly.
The price is high (starting at £119), and the Lyocell fabric is semi-synthetic rather than fully natural. For cooling specifically, this is one of the strongest mattress protectors we tested. But the Dosaze achieves similar cooling with natural bamboo at a lower price, which is hard to overlook.
Conclusions
For a comfortable, waterproof, and temperature-regulating mattress protector, I highly recommend the Dosaze Bamboo Cooling Waterproof Mattress Protector. It’s simply the best one on the market.
