Everyone love roasting marshmallows around a warm cozy fire with their friends. You don’t have to wait until the next time you go camping because you can build your own fire pit fairly cheaply and with minimal labor.
Here’s how to build your very own fire pit in your backyard:
Materials:
- Retaining wall blocks (this tutorial uses about 40 but the number of blocks you use will depend on the size of your pit)
- *Optional – Decorative retaining wall blocks (this tutorial uses about 30)
- Rubber mallet
- Bag of gravel rocks
- Bag of sand
- Construction adhesive glue
Step 1.) Measure out your circle. Lay out the blocks and cut into the ground with your shovel around the outer permitter of your blocks.
Step 2.) Pull your blocks up and cut out a 6 in. by 15 cm. hole.
Step 3.) Level out your hole by patting down the soil. You may need a piece of wood or something else to help you smooth it out. Pour down some sand over your dirt and re-level it out. The sand offers a firm base and makes your area easier to level out.
Step 4.) Stack out the bottom row of your retaining wall blocks and bang them into place with a rubber mallet.
Step 5.) Stack your layers of blocks and use construction glue to secure them together. Make sure you leave spaces between the blocks in the second row only.
Step 6.) Build four tiers and add a decorative top “lip” if you want to make your fire pit look a little fancier.
Step 7.) Pour some gravel into your fire pit so that it cover at least one block’s worth of space. This helps to drain rain water. Sprinkle the outer perimeter of your fire pit with gravel rocks to prevent your grass from catching fire.
Step 8.) Enjoy your awesome new fire pit!
