We touch our kitchen cabinets all day long, which means it’s easy for them to get dirty. They are also a piece of furniture in the home that we rarely clean. After a while, our cabinets can get pretty funky and that funk can be hard to get rid if you neglect it.
In fact, microbiologist Dr. Charles Gerba, a.k.a. Dr. Germ, says that neglecting your kitchen can make it even dirtier than a toilet seat.
“People disinfect their toilet seats all the time, but they don’t realize that they really need to pay attention in the kitchen too,” Gerba told Food and Wine.
Germs and bacteria can make your family sick and no one needs germs lurking about during this harsh flu season. So you’ll want to make sure you are cleaning the places in your kitchen that your family has lots of contact with, such as the cabinets.
Here are 7 ways to make your cabinets clean and bacteria-free:
Bleach
If your cabinets are in need of being disinfected from all the grubby hands that touch it all day long you can mix 1/2 cup of bleach with a gallon of water and use a sponge to scrub your cabinets down with the mixture. Let the bleach sit on your cabinets for about 15 minutes before you wipe them down with warm water and let them air dry.
Vinegar
When trying to de-grease and cleanse your cabinets try using vinegar. Mix equals parts of vinegar and warm water in a spray bottle and spray the solution onto your cabinets. Let it sit for a few minutes before wiping them down with a cloth.
Baking Soda and Coconut Oil
This method works well with cabinets that have a lot of grooves that you want to deep clean. Create a paste from one part coconut oil and two parts baking soda until you get a thick paste. Rub the mixture onto your cabinets and use a sponge or old toothbrush to clean your cabinets. Wipe down with a damp cloth.
Dish Soap
Mix dish soap and warm water and use a cloth to scrub the cabinets down with the soap mixture. Dry with a clean dry cloth.
Oil Soap
If there is extra caked-on food or grease on your cabinets dry using an oil soap. You can spot treat stains with oil on a soft cloth or rub down all your cabinets. Go over it with a clean dry cloth to remove leftover residue.
Ice
Sticky gunk or caked-on foods can also be removed with ice. Put a few cubes in a plastic bag and let it sit on the spot until it gets hard. Use a plastic knife or spoon to scrape all the gunk away.
Vinegar and Salt
Another good method to remove thick grease or caked-on food is to make a paste from vinegar and salt. Apply it over your stain and let it sit for a little while. Then scrub the grime away. Wipe down with a cloth damp with warm water.
