There are few people who actually love cleaning. For the rest of us, we’d like to make it as painless as possible. You can have your house spick-and-span in no time by knowing a few tricks from professional cleaners.
These hacks will help you to save time and elbow grease. Lets begin with:
Use socks to clean blinds
Blinds can be a real pain to clean and sometimes a feather duster doesn’t do the trick. Dampen a sock in a solution of water and vinegar and put it over your hand. Use the sock to wipe down each slat.
This concoction will remove mattress stains
Mattress stains can be stubborn and tough to remove. But not when you’re using this stain remover method. Mix baking soda, liquid dish soap, and hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle and spray over the affected areas. If they are major stains, you’ll want to soak the area and let it sit for a few minutes before blotting it dry with a towel. The stains should lessen and disappear.
Make it dry faster
Tired of waiting for the dryer to finish? Good news! There’s a way to make your clothes dry quicker in a pinch. Just toss a dry towel in with the wet clothes and place your machine on the fastest spin cycle. It will soak up all the excess moisture.
Remove stubborn water marks on stainless steal
Watermarks can look very unsightly on stainless steel. You can clean the area but it still looks dirty. To get rid of stubborn water stains, wet the faucet with warm water and wipe it down with wax paper.
Degrease your cabinets
Cabinets, especially the ones over your stove, can get very dirty from the grease and moisture over time. Take a dampened sponge and squeeze four drops of dish soap on it and gently wipe your cabinets down. This will cut through that oil and filth. Just make sure to not scrub them because it will destroy the cabinet’s natural finish.
Dishwasher tablets in the shower
Your dishwashing tablets get your glasses sparkling clean, so why not your shower door? Wet a pod in some warm water then use it to scrub away soap scum and other nastiness. Rinse the soap away with some hot water.
Cut out hair from your vacuum with a seam ripper
The effectiveness of your vacuum can come to an immediate halt if you don’t clean out the roller. Trying to free all the hair and whatever else that gets wrapped around it can be a pain. But not if you’re using a seam ripper. Use it to rip the threads and hair from your roller.
Squeegee your carpets
Is pet hair doing a number on your carpet and vacuum cleaner? Try running an inexpensive squeegee over it first. It will immediately pull up the large clumps of hair. You can go back over it with your vacuum without putting too much strain on it.
Use white wine to cancel out red wine
Spilling some red wine is not the end of your carpet. As long as you have some white wine in the house. First, pour some water over your red wine stain. Then wipe the white wine onto it to remove the stain.
Use hairspray to get lipstick out
You can use hairspray to remove lipstick stains from clothing. Spray the area with hairspray and let it soak for about 15 minutes. Next, dip a cloth in warm water and wipe off the hair spray. You might have to do this a few times before it comes out completely.
Coffee filter as screen wipes
Stop buying expensive wipes to clean your phone and computer screens. Use a coffee filter instead. This will leave a lint-free shine.
Dish soap to clean the blender
Our blenders can get pretty dirty, especially after making a smoothie. An easy way to get rid of all that caked-on fruits and veggies is to fill it with warm water and dish soap. Run the blender for a few minutes until it comes clean. Just don’t put too much soap in it!
Get that last bit of dirt with a paper towel
We’ve all been frustrated by that last line of dirt and dust that sneaks under the dustpan when we sweep. But there’s a way to get rid of it. Place a wet paper towel on the floor and brush that tiny line of dust on the paper towel or just wipe it up if you can.
Use sugar to remove Tupperware stains
Tupperware can get pretty stained after a few uses even if you wash it. Mix sugar, dish soap, ice, and water inside your plastic container. Let this mixture stay for a few minutes before scrubbing it clean.
Clean your fan without making a mess
Sometimes when we clean a fan the dirt and dust on top of the fan end up on our floor. You can prevent this with a pillowcase. Place the pillowcase over the blade and drag it across the blade to wipe it clean.
Use black tea for windows
If your windows or mirrors have tough stains, you can use black tea to remove them. Soak a few bags of tea in 8 oz. of boiling water and let it steep for an hour. Once it is cooled down, pour it into a spray bottle and use it to clean your windows. The Tannic acid in the tea will cut through grease and grime.
Vinegar cleans your showerhead
Get rid of mineral deposits on your showerhead with vinegar. Pour some into a plastic bag and place the bag around your shower head. Make sure the vinegar covers the whole showerhead. Secure the bag with a rubber band and let it soak for a few hours before removing and rinsing.
Remove foot odor with alcohol
Stinky shoes can be a thing of the past with vinegar. Pour some into a spray with water. Spritz your shoes every so often to remove and ward off the stench.
Clean cast iron with salt and a potato
Cast iron skillets have to be properly cleaned. The best way to do this without damaging it is with a potato, kosher salt, and oil. Give your skillet a light coat of vegetable oil and sprinkle the salt over it. Slice a potato in half and use it to scrub the skillet clean. Rise clean.
Use an onion to clean your grill
This seems counterintuitive but you can clean the caked-on food off of your grill with more food. Slice an onion in half and skewer it. Use the cut side to scrub your grill. This has to be done when your grill is still hot. It’s best to do this right after every use.
Vinegar for cleaning your dishwasher
Even your dishwasher needs to be washed sometimes. One way to do this is to place a cup of white vinegar on the top rack. Sprinkle some baking soda over the bottom rack and put your machine on a normal cycle. This will make your machine smell better, look better, and operate better. Some people like to add a touch of essential oils as well for scent boosting.
Dishwashing tablet for your oven door
Our glass oven doors can get so greasy that we can’t even see through them. You can use pressed powder dishwashing tablets to clean them. Throw on some rubber gloves and wet the tablet so it’s soaked but not enough that it falls apart. Use this to scrub the door clean. Wipe everything off with a damp towel
Pick up lampshade dust with a lint roller
You can feather dust a lampshade but it doesn’t always get all the dust off. Prevent your lampshade from getting dirty by using a lint roller on it. This will even remove the static cling dust on your shade.
Vinegar and baking soda for stinky towels
Do your towels have a moldy smell? Just wash them with baking soda and vinegar. Place vinegar in the prewash cycle and baking soda in the main wash compartment. Then run your towels through a cycle with hot water.
Vinegar to clean the microwave
Remove tough stains from your microwave with some vinegar. Grab a microwave-safe bowl and fill it with 16 oz. of water and two teaspoons of vinegar. You can even toss some lemons in it. Run it through the microwave for 5 minutes on high. Leave it closed for 3 minutes after the 5 minutes are up. Use a glove to take the bowl out and a sponge to wipe the microwave down.
Use bread to take up broken glass
Getting up tiny shards of glass can be difficult. Safely get it all up with a piece of bread. Throw on a pair of rubber gloves and press over the broken glass area with a piece of bread. It will grip onto those tiny hard-to-see shards.
