Such a thoughtful design, so well done.

Caleb Brackney is a college student that lives full time on a bus. A bus he built out to make look real nice.

Nicer than any dorm room and even nicer than some apartments.

Brackney was working toward a dual master’s in architecture and landscape architecture at the University of Tennessee when he was inspired by a family member who retrofitted a bus into a home.

So, he traveled to Rome, Georgia where he bought a 1995 International Thom 3800 school bus from the Boys and Girls Club.

The 36-ft bus cost him $3,000. He would spend another $7,000 turning it into a home he now calls “The Roamer”.

First, he made a list of all the ways he would need to function in the space and how he would be able to carry out these activities, then he built his design around that.

The outside of the bus is painted black and tan with a sort of mountainscape which allowed him to use more of the black paint which was cheaper.

His kitchen looks like many people’s dream kitchen with gorgeous black cabinetry, a woodblock counter, coffee machine, and a sink with a great faucet.

He uses magnetic strips to hang kitchen knives and utensils.

Across from that is more counter space with an oven, microwave, and a crockpot that’s right behind the driver’s seat.

This thing even has beautiful wood floors. Next to the oven is a wooden ledge that has a roll-out keyboard underneath it and a bench. The area doubles as a counter to sit and eat at or a work desk.

Above this area is a skylight and ceiling made from outdoor siding.

The Roamer also has an enormous 7-ft clothing and shoe closet with two doors that swing open for full access.

The next area of the home features a 6-ft sofa with storage underneath and the ability to function as a double bed for guests.

The sofa’s cushions were made from a used sofa.

A good-sized TV hangs from the wall.

The entire rear space of the bus is flooded with natural light from all the windows, but Brackney installed some PVC pipes that are painted copper to look like metal and were turned into a lighting fixture.

Behind the sofa is a bed with a hidden cabinet door in the headboard.

The Roamer also has a toilet with a blackwater tank and foot pedal flush.

There’s even a shower.

The Roamer comfortably provides living space for Brackney, his girlfriend, and their dog. And they even decorate it for the holidays!

They also built a portable garden from pallets for the outside of the back of the bus for an extra home touch.
