Do you live in the city but dream of being in nature? If so, you’ll absolutely love the Vipp Shelter.
Located outside Copenhagen, Denmark, this nature lover’s retreat is the perfect spot to unplug, unwind, and recharge. The two-level steel structure can sleep up to four people and is packed with functionality.
Despite the fact that a majority of the home’s walls are windows, the Vipp Shelter’s lakeside location provides guests with all the privacy they need.
“The dream was to build a livable design object we could place anywhere in the world,” Kasper Egelund, CEO of Vipp, says on their website.
Only the bathroom and sleeping loft are secluded by four walls – otherwise, the main living space, kitchen, and dining room are completely exposed to nature.
The large windows that serve as the main wall downstairs also slide open to truly bring the outside in. The Vipp Shelter’s design was inspired by large objects like planes and submarines – Vipp wanted to keep all the design elements stripped of any unnecessary features.
The kitchen’s main focal point is the large island, under a giant skylight, which boasts a sink and stovetop range.
The large wood-burning fireplace keeps the home warm, along with electric heat running through the floors. The kitchen flows directly into the dining space with bench seating – a wonderful place to enjoy meals while admiring the calm waters.
Also downstairs, you’ll find the daybed area where guests can relax with a cup of coffee and a good book.
With additional bedding, this space can also serve as a sleeping area for two people. The furnishings and decor were kept dark and minimal, the design team wanted to make sure that the main focus of the home was actually the nature surrounding it.
The bathroom is modern and simple.
The bathroom features a floating vanity, which has drawers for storage, and a large walk-in rain shower. It feels surprisingly large despite the black walls.
Climb the industrial ladder to access the second story.
Once upstairs, you’ll enter the sleeping loft – a cozy space for a peaceful night’s sleep.
In this room, the windows don’t serve as the walls, but as the ceiling instead – gaze up at the night stars, or listen to the rain, before falling into slumber.
Function is key in this minimalistic steel structure.
“Every screw serves a purpose. The outer steel grid contains 10.000 screws, and every single one of them serves a purpose,” the Vipp website says.
Every year the Vipp Shelter opens up their doors for a limited number of bookings. Visit their website for more photos and details.
