Have you ever been inside a Japanese home?
Let’s take a quick virtual tour!
Here’s Josiah to show us around a typical Japanese apartment.
“This is our apartment. Welcome to Takasaki.”
The small Japanese city of Takasaki is known for papier-mâché Daruma dolls and steam locomotives.
With a population of almost 400,000, Takasaki, located in the Gunma province, offers a more tranquil lifestyle than dense urban centers such as Tokyo.
Josiah gives a quick view of the adjacent street, revealing a cemetery.
“It’s a residential neighborhood… with a ceremonial graveyard.”
The quaint tombstones are as unique as the city, itself.
Josiah walks upstairs en route to his apartment, revealing a rack of bikes.
Bikes can be a life-changing transportation choice!
Japan has a huge, flourishing bike culture!
Josiah lives on the second floor of a three-story apartment building with his wife, Noeru.
She opens the door enthusiastically.
“Hi!”
Hello there!
Noeru welcomes us into her and Josiah’s magical mini-kingdom.
I don’t know about you, but I’m super excited!
In Japan, always take off your shoes at the entrance! It’s sanitary and prevents dirt tracks.
Welcome to the kitchen.
Although it’s modest, many a mean meal’s been through these premises.
Josiah and Noeru shed light on their abnormally tall cabinets, which they believe helped lower the rent!
They’re huge into coffee. It’s practically a necessity!
Check out their designated “coffee corner.” This is where the real magic happens!
That’s a lot of power in such a small space.
Noeru’s eager to get to other parts of the apartment.
“My favorite thing is this microwave oven.”
But it’s not just any microwave oven.
It can even bake bread!
They’re a bit different than the ones in the United States.
Josiah and Noeru love their fiery metal food box.
“It’s amazing.”
They skipped out on a washing machine in place of a refrigerator and microwave oven.
Next up: the bathroom.
“Japanese people love baths, in general. So we have a bathtub.”
Interesting, interesting. Everyone could use a little bath time now and again.
Their trash is separated into logical waste categories, including a separate bin for coffee and espresso.
Check out the living room!
It’s a bright day. Fortunately, these curtains allow the perfect amount of sunlight.
Unfortunately, she can’t see much through the drawn curtains. I wonder what the view’s like?
Regardless, their room has a calming ambiance to it.
Are those giraffe figurines in the background?
On the opposite side of the room lies the “office” – a sleek wooden counter with a laptop.
Below the office lies Noeru’s comfy reading corner.
This snug nook’s more than meets the eye!
You see, the nook’s foundation is their futon. In other words, Noeru’s nook’s cushion is also Josiah and Noeru’s bed.
“So the Japanese-style bed, you put it away every day and then during the nighttime you just lay it out in the middle of the floor and in the morning you put it away again.”
To top things off, they do have an awesome view!
You can even see some neighbors in the distance!
Josiah and Noeru wrap up their tour with some kind words for their global audience:
“Thank you for coming! We will see you next time.”
Thanks for letting us take a peek into a different lifestyle!
