Getting Started:

First Chain a piece in multiples of 8. A scarf might be around 8-16 chains whereas a blanket might be around 80 chains. It depends on how big your project is going to be. Add 7 to the end of it.

In the next row, skip 2 then double crochet along the foundation chain starting from the 3rd chain. At the end of the row, chain 2 then turn your work.

Next, you want to skip the first stitch then double crochet into the front post of the next stitch. Yarn over then double crochet into the front post of the next stitch again. You want to do this 2 more times for a total of 4 times.

After 4 front post double crochets, yarn over and crochet into the back post of the next stitch. Do this again 3 more times for a total of 4 back post double crochet stitches.

Continue to switch back and forth between front post double crochet (x4) and back post double crochet (x4) until you reach the end of the row. The row should always fit all the x4 front and back post crochets because we added the extra 7 chains.

Once you reach the end of the row, half double crochet into the last stitch, chain 2 then turn your work. Continue to build the pattern, but the next row should begin with the opposite of the last row. For example, since we started with a front post double crochet, the next row will start with a back post double crochet. This continues to alternate.

Continue to build the pattern until you are happy with the length. At the end, cut off the excess yarn and tie it off. You may want to stitch the extra piece of yarn in with a needle.
