Katie Hanes was just scrolling through Zillow when she came across a home listing.
The price tag was $5,000.
And, it was located in Portsmouth, Ohio.
She thought it was a typo.
Before she bought the property, Hanes already dreamed about making a one-of-a-kind house for Airbnb.
And the pink inspiration came to be after Hanes visited Rose Cafe in Sunny Isles Beach, Florida.
The cafe’s main attraction is its pink motif.
This gave Hanes the idea of making her own pink-inspired Airbnb.
After winning the bid for $10,111 in December 2021, she began the tedious process of renovation just about a month after.
The house was built more than a century ago and was in disrepair.
It was historical and looked like it.
The porch was crumbling and some parts of the ceiling caved in.
Hanes’ dad, who has decades of experience as a contractor and multiple homes flipped to boot, helped her with the needed work.
Repairs were slow but sure.
Most of the renovations are done during the weekends since Hanes’ dad is working as a chemical operator at a nearby power plant.
“This is what he’s done his whole life,” she said. “I knew he’d be the one to help bring this project to life,” Hanes added. The current running cost for the renovation is now about $13,000.
Hanes’ dad helped her with the blueprints.
He based them on what she imagined the house would look like as an all-pink Airbnb.
She explained that the plan would be to put a photogenic, rose-covered wall at the entrance. She took this inspiration from Rose Cafe.
As the plans in putting up the all-pink Airbnb, Hanes began documenting the project through Instagram.
She was only expecting locals to share and see her posts. But to her surprise, the followers reached more than 300 thousand already.
Some brands and artists also reached out to her and pitched collaborations. And she has received countless messages of encouragement from as far as Australia.
Hanes even connected with the daughter of a previous owner of the house.
Pink accents instead of all-in.
Hanes desperately wanted to have an all-pink house. However, the bright-colored siding would not be suitable for the project.
She went ahead and settled for white vinyl siding for $3,500. Pink accents will be placed on the exterior, from the front door to the shutters and ultimately to the porch.
Hanes also loves to visit thrift stores to find valuables. Most of the items that will be part of the interior design are thrifted and transformed to accentuate the house.
Friends and family also brought offerings.
There were pink pots and pans, and Hanes even took advantage of a 90% clearance sale on Christmas items.
She was able to grab pink lights, trees, and ornaments for her pink-inspired Airbnb.
Though there’s no opening date set yet, Hanes already plans to market her home for parties such as birthdays, bachelorettes, and friend trips, and even as a photo studio for brands.
Hanes plans to have the first guest to be the woman who used to live in the house, together with her daughter and granddaughter.
