By the time retirement rolls around, wouldn’t it be nice to be completely debt free? Imagine being able to actually save money instead. This was exactly what Peter Matheson had in mind for his retirement.

Peter originally started building his tiny home, called Mi Pad, as an experiment. He wanted to see the process of creating affordable housing; however, as he continued to build, he realized he was actually creating his retirement home.

The Mi Pad is a completely off-the-grid home that provides Peter the freedom to do whatever he’d like with his retirement.

The 125-square-foot tiny home on wheels is modest, but it provides Peter with everything he needs including a bedroom, kitchen, workspace, and bathroom with a soaking tub.

The narrow home is packed with functionality and is completely off-the-grid — and can be efficiently run on solar power if necessary.

From this view, you can see the kitchen to the left, workspace to the right, and the bedroom that converts to a living room in the rear of the home. Large windows on either side of the tiny home provide tons of light and a refreshing breeze.

The kitchen is small but efficient. It features two-burners and a double-basin sink.

There isn’t much counter space, nor does it have an oven, but for Peter’s style of cooking, the double burner is all he needs. Cabinets provide plenty of storage for pots, pans, dishes, and pantry items.

When the bed in the rear of the home isn’t in use, it can be transformed into a comfortable lounge area.

All that Peter needs to do is grab the extra cushions in the trailer’s utility area and voila! It instantly transforms into a cozy seating area for up to four people.

The bathroom is by far the most impressive ‘room’ in this tiny home.

The bathroom features a shower with soaking tub. The tub is actually made from an old freezer from a salvage yard. Peter had to sit in quite a few of them before finding the perfect one for his DIY-retirement home.

The bathroom also features a composting toilet.

The hot water for the entire home is heated via propane. The water heater can be seen here just above the toilet.

The home might be tiny, but it’s completely self-sufficient and can be parked anywhere. For Peter, he has a streamside spot where he can relax and watch the wildlife.
