The tiny house movement only seems to be increasing in popularity, with most people being drawn to the idea of debt-free living.
Tiny homes allow you to live as one with nature and do something good for the environment. Paired with the low costs of owning and maintaining a tiny home, it’s safe to see why so many people are jumping on the trend.
One Australian couple who recently made the switch to tiny home living are Joanna and Mark.
The pair’s tiny house is the perfect mix of chic and cozy, with a steel exterior painted light blue, and deep cedarwood accents around the windows and framing the glass entrance door.
Unlike many of the tiny homes we’ve seen, this home has its own proper outdoor space, with a decking area complete with tables and chairs, pot plants, and a nice patch of grass surrounding the property.
The couple were keen to live more of a minimalistic lifestyle with less waste and less negative impact.
Their tiny house allows them to do this, also enabling them to live completely debt-free.
Impressively, Joanna and Mark built their home themselves – with the help of Mark’s dad, who has built a lot in the past.
There’s nothing simplistic about their home, suggesting no corners were cut in the building process.
Heading inside the home, there’s a surprisingly spacious kitchen and living area.
The couple added more windows to the original design to let more light in and prevent the space from feeling cramped.
There’s enough space for a single bed that the couple use as their “chilling out day bed”. Underneath the mattress is plenty of storage space for things that the pair don’t use all the time.
With no space for a TV, the couple watch all their movies on a pull-down screen and a projector with a cinema vibe.
Being a chef, Mark felt the kitchen was an important feature of the home. The plumber initially told the pair that they’d need a camping stove, but Mark managed to install an oven with a four-burner stove.
The bathroom is a particularly unique feature of the house. It’s a wetroom, so there’s no segregated shower, and the design is clean, modern and non-invasive.
Moving on to the couple’s bedroom, it’s in a loft space with a paneled wooden ceiling and windows to let in the light.
There’s enough landing space for storage, and, as Mark says, to prevent them from getting out of bed and falling down the stairs.
The whole home with all the equipment cost just under $50,000 Australian dollars to build, equivalent to just under $35,000 US dollars.
You couldn’t buy a house for that price, especially not one as beautiful as this, so it’s definitely a good bargain.
Joanna and Mark currently live in Mark’s parents’ back yard, but they hope to up and move in the future.
They’re saving up for their own piece of land that gives them a bit more private space – especially as Joanna has just given birth to a daughter.
Looking at Joanna and Mark’s tiny home, it’s easy to see why so many people convert to this idyllic way of living.
