We all know what it’s like heading into a new year.

Everyone’s still recovering from the chaotic commercial whirlwind of Christmas and refocusing their gaze on what needs to change for the coming year.

One thing a whole lot of people have in common when it comes to this first chapter of the new year is clearing the clutter.

After all, who doesn’t want a fresh space to match that fresh start vibe?

On Reddit’s r/declutter, a user named u/BuildingMyEmpireMN shared their unique approach to this annual ritual.

“What’s your decluttering New Year’s Resolution?” they asked.

Their own plan? “Adding a full-wall bookcase with doors to store all of our board games and building a storage rack for our Rubbermaid bins so they’re easier to go through.”

They admitted it was more about organizing than minimizing, but hey, if everything has its place, that’s half the battle won, right?

The responses poured in, showing just how common the struggle to declutter is.

One user, duckfeatherduvet, shared their multi-faceted plan.

“Closet – I’m going to make an effort to wear all my clothes this year, which will help me understand what I don’t want any more and get rid of it.”

They also planned to tackle their furniture situation, saying, “I’m not in an economic position where I need to be desperate with furniture anymore.”

They even had a strategy for paperwork, which, let’s be honest, is the bane of most of our existences.

Missscarlettheharlot chimed in with a goal that many of us can relate to: “I’d like to stop decluttering.”

They dreamed of reaching a point where their house, and their life, made sense.

“I’d like my house, and my things, to make sense. Including my clothing, which is the bane of my existence.”

Then there was kellymakesart, who faced the daunting task of merging households.

“Combining households for two adults in their 30’s, both with significant ‘stuff’ hobbies (sewing + knitting vs board games + tabletop minis) has been a daunting task.”

Their first step? Going through all the holiday boxes and deciding what’s worth keeping.

True_Balance_6151 had a tall order too.

“To get rid of some books and unnecessary papers. Reorganize my closet and really try to get rid of extra stuff that I don’t use.”

They also planned to tackle the dreaded area under the kitchen sink.

“This is a tall order for me, but I am feeling confident that I can do it! 🙂”

Each of these Reddit users, in their own way, highlighted a universal truth: decluttering isn’t just about getting rid of things.

It’s about creating a space that reflects who you are and how you want to live.

It’s about finding peace in your surroundings and, in turn, peace within yourself.
