There’s nothing better than waking with a freshly brewed cup of coffee and a sweet treat! May I recommend this wonderfully delicious and easy-to-bake Dutch Coffee Cake that’s been pleasing generations of taste buds. My mother always made this coffee cake for my grandfather, because it was his favorite. When I started drinking coffee, I began to truly appreciate its cinnamon sweet taste and moist texture, which pairs perfectly with a cup o’ joe. It’s also now a favorite of my in-laws, so I’m happy to say that the love for this cake keeps expanding. This recipe is also my go to for house warming parties, holiday gifts or a sweet treat for a lazy, weekend morning; and it never disappoints! This recipe has simple ingredients, most of which you’ll likely have on hand in your kitchen, and can be made in one bowl with little mess. Also, you can either bake it in a Bundt pan or individual bread pans.
Here’s what you’ll need to prepare a Dutch Coffee Cake
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In a mixing bowl, combine the following ingredients with a hand mixer until well-blended and smooth:
- ½ cup (1 stick) butter, softened
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 eggs, slightly beaten
- 8 ounces sour cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 2 cups sifted, all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- For the topping, combine the following two ingredients:
- ¼ cup cinnamon
- ½ cup sugar
Use either a greased Bundt pan or grease 4 small, bread pans and then spoon half of the batter into the selected pan(s) and top with some of the cinnamon and sugar mixture, just enough to cover the top of the batter.
Then, scoop the remaining batter into the pan(s) and cover the top with the remaining cinnamon and sugar mixture. Bake in a pre-heated oven for 35 minutes, for both Bundt pan or small loaf pans. The cake is finished baking when you can insert a tester/knife into the cake and it comes out clean. Let the cake cool completely before serving.
Easy as pie (or cake)!
This is such an easy recipe and can be adjusted based on your sweet tooth. For instance, my in-laws prefer less sweet treats, so I reduce the amount of sugar I put in the topping mixture. Also, this cake is delicious on its own, dipped in coffee or served with a little bit of butter.
This cake also works nicely as a homemade, inexpensive and yummy gift. Here is an example of how to package small coffee cakes for gifting. Tip: you can buy clear bags and ribbon at your local craft store. You can also pick up holiday-themed paper bread liners for baking, giving your coffee cake a fancier presentation!
However, you decide to try this cake – at home with your honey over a cup of coffee, sharing with friends at a party or giving as a gift to your co-workers – you can certainly have your cake and eat it, too!
