Paper bats hanging from the ceiling, and skulls, witches, spiders, and ghosts are the classic Halloween decoration we are used to making or seeing in friends’ houses when we visit them for trick-or-treating.
Of course, there are always those who do some major research before decorating their house and yard every year.
Those dedicated Halloween fans seek original ideas that will creep out of those who will be stopping by their home during the spooky season.
Lately, there’s been a new trend in Halloween decor – one that is simple and easy to make and that requires just a handful of materials that you probably already have on hand.

They’re called “cemeterriums” – and they’re all you need for your fireplace or table decoration this year.
Although it’s pretty easy to make, it may be helpful to read the instructions below so as to make your cemeterrium as scary as it gets – and as realistic as it gets, too!
You’ll need the following materials for your project:
- a glass container
- sand
- dirt
- Halloween-related accessories (moss, dried leaves, doll pieces, tiny pumpkins, etc)

As you have no doubt realized by now, this project doesn’t require any special equipment or skill. You just need to get creative and keep in mind that your cemeterrium is meant to scare people.
The steps to follow are easy and it’s hard to go wrong.
First, use a glass container. Any glass container will do, really, but a wider one may be more convenient for you. Remember you’ll need to put stuff in there, so make sure your hand fits in it!
You don’t have to buy a new container, but if you want to, you can go to the dollar store and buy one really cheap.
Next, you’ll need to make a base layer in your cemeterrium. This should be sand, which is supposed to give depth to your setting. Use as much or as little as you want, and then move on to dirt.
You don’t have to go crazy with dirt, just a handful of it will do. You can get it from your yard – how easy was that?
And here comes the fun part: the actual decoration of your cemeterrium.
You can use moss, dried leaves, doll pieces that you don’t use anymore, or even Halloween treats.
Of course, if you are crafty, feel free to make graveyard headstones out of clay. It would be amazing!
Once you have decided on what you are going to put in there, start arranging it carefully. If you want your scary decor to be more stable, you can use hot glue and toothpicks at the bottom, but this is optional.
You’ll know when you’re done – and we’d love to see your results.
If you’re unsure of what might work, there are plenty of examples online to help inspire your handmade creation.
