Want to add more hummingbirds to your garden? It’s actually easier than you’d think!

Hummingbirds are some of the world’s smallest birds and they’re so dang cute! They get their name from their fast-flapping wings which create a sort of humming sound, and there are over 300 species of these little guys. Did you know that some hummingbirds are actually endangered? Nearly 10% of all hummingbird species are actually threatened by extinction, according to the Hummingbird Society.

Let’s break down how you can help give these adorable birds a home in your backyard in these 3 simple steps!

1. Plant a Hummingbird-friendly Garden

Hummingbirds tend to be attracted to red, orange, or purple tube-like flowers because they usually have more nectar than other flowers. Get a few pots or window boxes full of these flowers and you’ll start seeing hummingbirds in no time. Pro-tip: Ask your local garden center which flowers would be best suited to your region’s climate.

2. Gather Your Materials

Wine bottle feeders are easy and cheap to make. All you need is some wire to secure your bottle, wire cutters, a special hummingbird drip plug, and your favorite wine bottle. Don’t be afraid to really wrap your wine bottle with wire, especially if your wire is a little thinner than pictured. If you’re feeling especially creative, add some cute decals and designs to your wine bottle to attract even more hummingbirds. Remember – they love bright colors!

Once you have your wine bottle securely wired, you’ll want to add some sugar-water solution to your wine bottle. This will act as a form of nectar for the hummingbirds, and believe me, they won’t be able to tell the difference. After getting your hummingbird ‘nectar’ together, firmly insert the special plug. You’ll want it to also be tightly secured so all of your nectar doesn’t spill accidentally. When you’re done with these steps, you’ll be ready to hang up your wine bottle feeder!

3. Enjoy!
