Slice a cucumber just so and it becomes a work of art

If you’re captivated by food art, and you find yourself looking over the buffet table at those fancy hotels and restaurants, you must be wondering how on earth those guys found the skills to carve intricate shapes out of fruits.

Well, Scrumdiddlyumptious is here for all of us and they have this cool instructional video on how you can impress your guests in your own home.

Here’s an Apple Swan.

So obviously, you will need:

  • an apple
  • toothpicks

Take a small, sharp knife and halve an apple.

Cut a wedge out of one half on both the left and right sides then cut another wedge out of these two wedges.

Repeat twice as shown in the video.

Fan out the sliced wedges to bring out the wings.

Slowly cut a swan’s head out of the other half of the apple, using small incisions.

Using a toothpick insert it into the body to attach the neck.

Use apple seeds for the eyes.

Carve out a swan comb for the head using the rest of the apple.

Make a slight indent on the part of the head.

Place the comb on your desired spot.

Now for the Cucumber Cactus.

You’ll need the following:

  • cucumbers, ends cut off
  • wooden skewers

Cut ⅔ of a cucumber in half, then place two wooden skewers on either side of that half.

Make ⅕ inch slices along the cucumber up to the end.

Don’t worry as the skewers will prevent you from cutting all the way through.

Repeat the entire process with the other cucumber half.

Get rid of the skewers then shape the sliced ​​cucumber into a wreath.

Hold the ends together with a toothpick to make it easier.

Build a small tower of cucumber wreaths.

Top with a carved flower radish for a little more pizzazz.

This is the Mandarin Orange Rose. These are all you need.

  • mandarin orange
  • 1 mini cucumber

Peel the orange and cut the pieces in half lengthways.

Fan out the halved pieces in a flower shape.

Cut off ⅓ of the mini cucumber then cut it into 4 equally slanted pieces.

Carve and fan out the 4 pieces and place the cucumber leaves around the mandarin flower.

This Apple Compass is real easy. Cut 4 wedges around the four sides of the apple stem. Fan them out like in the video. Look at how beautiful that is.

For the Melon Butterfly you will need 1 melon.

Cut the melons into slices then cut each slice in half.

Cut ¾ of the way down along the inner section of the fruit’s rind.

Cut the rest of the fruit as shown.

Cut the flesh in half lengthwise, making sure to leave a thick skin of the rind.

Unfold it and your butterfly is ready to fly!

For Cucumber Stairs you’ll need:

  • 4-inch cucumbers, ends cut off
  • wooden skewers
  • cherry tomatoes

Take the cucumber and peel one side then cut it in half.

Make ⅕ inch slices until you reach the end of the fruit.

Push a wooden skewer through the middle then fan out the “stairs”.

Top the skewer with a cherry tomato.

How about a Leek Star? Here’s what you need.

  • leek
  • toothpicks

Cut angular slits along the leek. Push a toothpick into the middle then fan out the leaves.

Stick the star-shaped leek on a cucumber hunk then top the toothpick with a cherry tomato.

Voila!

This cute Orange Bear will catch the eyes of those kids. You’ll need:

  • orange
  • wooden skewers
  • cloves

Take the orange and cut off the top and bottom sections.

Slowly cut two small circles off the bottom orange slice for the ears.

Make a small cut on top and insert the ears as shown.

Place two cloves above the stem for eyes and you have a face.

Cut out the flesh of the orange along the inner rind then remove the core and cut into cubes.

Cut a wedge and a gap from the peel so you can create two arms.

Cut a small space in the back for the head to stay in place.

Fill the space with orange cubes then stick the remaining bottom lid on a wooden skewer.

Stick it on the bear’s side so he has a little umbrella.

They’re super cute and visually appealing.
