Foods of all kinds have expiration dates written right on the label, as do most medicines. But other household items rarely tell you when to throw them out. That’s why this list was put together.
1) Your Favorite Bra
Sure, there’s always going to be that one bra that you wear way past its expiration date. But, as a rule of thumb, keeping one for longer than a year just doesn’t work. Going shopping for bras every six months is ideal.
2) Sniff Your Spices
People think that spices don’t expire. While there are a few that can last as long as honey, most of them two to four years. That may be a long time, but there’s always those spices you don’t use that often.
3) Use A Few Before You Break Them
Believe it or not, pacifiers should only be used for about a month before you throw them out. Keep a few in rotation and you might be able to make them last longer. But don’t push it or else bacteria will build up even if you wash them.
4) Start With The Powders
Powdered makeup like foundation and eyeshadow should only be kept for a year after opening. This is easy to work with as you can always replace your favorites once a year.
5) Depending On Traffic
If you use your slippers all day, every day, you’ll need to replace them after a few months. But if it’s strictly while you’re in your bathrobe, they can last a year. Who doesn’t love getting them at Christmastime anyway?
6) Who Makes It Last That Long?
This depends on how you store it. If it’s in a cool, dry place and vacuum sealed, it can last for a year or more. If it’s halfway done, you can get six months out of it. But if the container is open, that will only last a month, or less.
7) How Often Do You Run?
This is crazy! The average pair of running shoes only last about 50 hours. That means, if you run for an hour a day, you won’t make it two months without needing a replacement.
8) You Say Potato
For some reason, potatoes rarely have an expiration date printed on the bag. Maybe because we throw them out when they start to smell, get soft, or grow eyes. But a good timeline is two months in unprepared storage.
9) Look For Bugs
The most important thing about the expiration of flour is bugs. If there’s no bugs, it’s probably safe to use if sifted. If it’s unopened, flour usually lasts six months for wheat and a year for white.
10) Liquid Doesn’t Last
Liquid makeup doesn’t last as long as powder for obvious reasons. In general, you will want to replace your mascara once every few months, or less if you use it every day.
11) Don’t Let It Reach A Month
It’s best to throw your sponges out every two to three weeks. If you do dishes every day then shoot for two weeks or even less. If you only do them once or twice a week, they can last up to a month.
12) Yes, The Sun Is Strong
Sunscreen is required by the FDA to last for three years. Which means, after that time, it can legally stop working effectively. Use your sunscreen no longer than two summers to make sure you are covered.
13) No Worries In 2020
No one has ever used disinfectant as much as they have in 2020. To be safe, make sure that you use it all up in two months because after that time, it starts to settle and won’t be as effective.
14) Longer Than You Think
Suprisingly enough, air freshener can last up to two years before it expires. There is usually an expiration date on the back of the bottles, but to be safe, stick to the two year rule.
15) Even If You Wash It
Pillows can last one to two years. Though washing your pillows can make them last longer, the inside will break down no matter what you do and won’t offer you enough support.
16) Get A Sharp Shave
If you shave every day, you’ll probably want to change your blade every week or possibly two if you have a nice, easy-to-disinfect razor. However, if you shave once or twice a week, then you can make them last up to eight weeks.
17) Don’t Worry, It’s A While
Most fire extinguishers last about ten years, some less, some more. This is a relief for most people but there are a few who have had the same one in their kitchen for the last three decades.
18) Don’t Do The Tongue Test
When you were a kid, you probably tried testing the battery by sticking it to your tongue. That is a horrible idea. A better way is to check the kind of batteries they are. Depending on the kind, they will last three to fifteen years when not in use.
19) You’re Be Left With Alcohol
The more base notes in the perfume, the longer it will last. But in general, perfume will last three to five years. But you can probably just do a sniff test if you really want to know.
20) Don’t Try This At Home
A power strip is a dangerous thing to use past its expiration. It’s best to not use them more than two years before replacing them. It’s not a big investment but it’s worth it.
21) Contain Your B.O.
Although you’ll probably run out before then, in the rare case that you don’t, replace your deoderant every six months or so. For sprays, you can shoot for a year, but for roll on, six months is safe.
22) Loofahs Aren’t Clean
Loofahs and other shower tools that stay in the shower are natural homes to bacteria. Replace them at least once a month if you shower just once a day. If you shower more, replace them even more often.
23) The Ironic Accident
Most smoke alarms last a decade, but for best results, replace them whenever you replace the batteries. If you want to know for sure, call an expert and give them your model number.
24) Bleach Can Expire
You would assume that the one substance that can kill almost anything would last longer that it does. But bleach should be safely thrown out every since months if you want to stay safe.
25) Prevent Lice
Unless you have an expensive brush, you should replace yours every three months or so. The wear may not be noticeable at first but before long, your hair will notice it.
26) Check For Mold
You can’t keep lotion dry, which is why the shelf life for it is shorter than other substances. In general, you’ll want to replace your lotion every year, or two if the container is easy to see it to check for anything out of the ordinary.
27) Get Off!
Insect repellent will do its job well if it hasn’t expired. Most of them have expiration dates on the label, but if they don’t, you can plan on replacing them every year or two.
28) Don’t Count On It
Now you probably don’t have ten-year-old paint sitting in your kitchen, but you might have some in the garage. It’s best to throw out any old paint after ten years or it will be a mess!
29) How Cheap Are They?
A cheap towel will probably need replaced every two years or so if they don’t get ratty. But a good towel can last anywhere form five to ten years! That one is a little surprising.
30) The Most Important Member
If you notice any cracks, chips, or stains, replace the bottle immediately. But if everything is in good condition, keep them no more than four months, though even less time is better.
31) No More UV Blocking
Though each pair of sunglasses is different, they usually stop being as effective in blocking harmful UV rays after about two years. So if you’re wearing them for any reason but fashion, start shopping.
32) It Doesn’t Bubble Alone
As long as the peroxide hasn’t been opened, it can last years. But once opened, you’ll want to throw it out after six months. It has so many uses but if it’s expired, none of those matter.
33) Don’t Reuse That Dial
The most important thing you can do with bar soap is store it in a dry place. When you store things in moist areas, they grow bacteria. If you keep your bar soap dry when not in use, it can last up to six weeks.
34) Even The Sockets
You can get an electrician to change out your outlets for you or turn your breaker off and do them yourself. While you can replace them every five years to be safe, most can last fifteen years without becoming a hazard.
35) Brush At Least Twice A Day
Your toothbrush should be replaced at least every three months, no matter how often you use it. If the bristles become to far apart, it won’t be as effective. No one likes going to the dentist, after all.
