Christmas is coming and if you’re tired of the same decorations, why not try DIY ornaments?
It’s not that hard to create stunning and affordable Christmas decorations, just like this folded star ornament by Samantha of Stitchin’ Post.
Simple ‘no-sew’ folded star ornaments
Here’s what you’ll need:
- A six-pack of fat quarters
- Flatter spray
- Threads to hang your stars
- Flat iron
We’ll start with cutting.
Get your fat quarter cloths and cut them into strips. Each star that you will make needs four strips.
The measurements are four inches by 14 inches.
It’s a 4-to-1 ratio.
Prepare all the strips that you will need. If you will create 10 stars, then you’ll need 40 pre-cut strips.
Then the next thing you’re going to do is to press them into quarters.
To do this, you need to bring the sides into the middle. It would be helpful to leave a tiny gap at the center.
This way, when you press them together, you won’t get excess cloth bulging.
Press the seam carefully.
Now that you have a nice clean edge, do it on the other side as well.
Once you are done, you can fold it back so you have your cloth quarters.
Give it another press and then set it aside.
The color options are endless.
You can choose any color combination that you like. For this video, we see four strips laid on the table.
Next, let’s take two and start with them.
Nailing down the symmetry
Make sure that the folded part faces towards the center and then you need to turn the other one so they face each other.
You will need to fold one away from you but leave about an inch and a half.
Now for the second quarter strip, fold it towards you, again, leaving the same space as the first one.
Repeat for the other two strips.
Once you’re done with the second pair, turn them horizontally and then flip them over.
The next step is to weave them.
Put the end that opens up inside the end of the cloth that is closed on the opposite strip. You’ll have four woven squares.
Now, you might notice all these shorter pieces on the top. Flip that over so that you have the longer pieces showing.
Then do the steps again. The closed end goes to the opened end, and so on.
Secure them tightly by weaving the last long strip into the first piece.
Let’s create the star tips.
Get one of the longer strips and fold this layer away from you.
Then flip it and fold it down. Now you can see one of the star’s points.
You’ll notice some excess fabric.
Cut that. Then fold it in half and secure the excess cloth and tuck it inside the square pockets.
Repeat the process on all eight strips.
For the thread, just stick a little bit on the top to attach the thread.
Tips from Samantha:
- Make sure when folding, leave a tiny gap. This ensures a clean fold.
- If you fold these strips right, you won’t have to stitch or glue them.
- You can choose any type of cloth color and pattern. Don’t be afraid to try.
