When a couple who lived the majority of their lives together on an island decided to move back to Waco, Texas, they wanted to live in a house that offered the same charm and appeal as their beachside bunker.
Texas doesn’t happen to offer a lot of those, but fortunately, Chip and Joanna Gaines are in the area.
If you’re a fan of HGTV, you’re a fan of Fixer Upper – the home remodeling show hosted by the cute, southern couple who has a knack for turning the blandest and rundown houses into beautiful, desirable forever homes. And that’s just what they did for the Fuch’s.
The house – named “The Faceless Bunker” – was a boring, two-story structure that lacked both color and personality. But through digital drawings that showed what the house could be, Chip and Jo convinced the couple that The Faceless Bunker could be the beach-style home in the country they were looking for.
Chip and Jo started with the home’s exterior, removing the improperly placed brick and attaching new siding and a faux balcony.
They also installed new windows so that the home was no longer “faceless,” replaced and painted the front door, and trimmed the yard with all new landscaping. When they were done with the exterior, the place looked like the tropical oasis the Fuch’s were looking for.
With a long, white bench, beach-colored accent pillows, and a pop of color provided by the tulips, the entry way is understated yet charming, just like the home. The cubby spaces provide perfect storage for shoes, umbrellas, and other essentials and eliminate clutter.
Joanna had the idea to remove the bulky wood railings and pillars, which blocked the view of the spacious yard, and to replace it all with modern steel posts and wiring.
The new kitchen is clean and modern, with white cabinets, exposed wood beams, and lots of natural lighting thanks to the large window. The island comes equipped with a stainless steel top, making it the perfect prep space for future meals. The blue tile backsplash was designed to look like moving water.
The dining room, located on the second floor and right next to the kitchen, is open and spacious, and provides a great view of the outdoors.
This former mudroom was transformed into a pantry and blocked off with beautifully crafted barn doors.
The workbench is ideal for small children to do their homework or an art project while Mom and Dad cook.
Joanna’s design involved removing the busy rock from the fireplace and replacing it with more modern slate tile and a cedar-beam mantel.
This beautiful secondary seating area off the main living space provides a cozy nook for reading and relaxing.
The master bedroom is simple yet elegant, with beautiful accent pieces, such as the floating bedside tables. With double doors that open up into the spa-like bathroom and a straw rug, the beach effect really comes to life in this room.
The remodeled master bath comes complete with a whirlpool tub, new tile floors, a glass shower, and a beautiful set of windows.
The lower-level den was converted into a game room, complete with a ping-pong table, and wet bar.
In true Gaines fashion, Chip and Jo managed to make yet another family happy by giving them their unlikely forever home.
