For lots of people, as their families grow, usually so does their living space. However, for Josh, Naomi, and Kilaian, it was just the opposite, they downsized – big time.
From New Zealand, Josh, Naomi, and their son Kilaian lived in a spacious 3-bedroom home in Christchurch. However, something seemed to be missing in life – quality time with one another. So, the family decided to sell their home, downsize, and move into a house truck where they could all live together debt-free.
Despite being a truck, the home is surprisingly large at 36-feet-long and 20 tons in weight.
Cleverly constructed, Josh and Naomi built a home that was a drastic change from their three-bedroom house, but it has all the same, if not more, benefits than they could have ever imagined. Let’s take a look inside and see how the growing family makes it work.
The interior of the home is warm, welcoming, and reminiscent of a log cabin.
The great room of the house truck offers plenty of space for the young couple and their son. Wood flooring and walls give the home a rustic and charming feel. From this angle, you can see the seating area, kitchen, and staircase leading up to one of the two lofts.
The living room features a large sofa and a wood-stove which serves as the heat source for the home.
As with most tiny homes, furniture serves multiple purposes – the long, comfy sofa also folds out to serve as a bed for guests. The couple made sure to have plenty of storage by constructing built-in shelves and cabinets. A large window and glass doors give the home an abundance of natural light.
The kitchen, although tiny, is absolutely packed with storage areas and functionality.
The refrigerator is built into the wall, along with plenty of drawers and cabinets to store food and dishware. Josh and Naomi claim that they have more storage in the house truck’s kitchen than their previous home. The kitchen features a sink, stove, and lots of counter space; a wooden slab goes over the sink to give them additional counter space when needed.
Head up the staircase to reach Josh and Naomi’s room located just above the kitchen.
The loft space was built to fit a queen-sized bed and clothing rack that serves as their closet. Not pictured, on the other side of the bed, are built-in shelves with cubbies for storage.
Located on the opposite side of the home is Kilian’s loft bedroom.
Of course, all kids need a place to play with their toys, and the family made sure to give Kilian exactly that. His bedroom is adorable and cozy with ample space for playing.
Even though the family downsized from a 3-bedroom home, believe it or not, their house truck also has a third bedroom.
Right now, the family uses the extra loft space as yet more storage; however, they’ll most likely be using the room for their future second child when the time is right.
For the young family, moving into the tiny home on wheels was all about having the lifestyle of their dreams. Learn more about their home and their story in the video below.
