Let’s face it, it’s harder to get a house now than before.

The wages are not up to par with the expenses, and most adults now are still paying for their student loans.

This is the reality that the Latigo family had to face. Now with three kids, Rachel and Jared had to be more creative with their lifestyle to make ends meet.

Rachel and Jared wanted to live a comfortable life.

However, with thousands of dollars meant for student loans and credit card fees, they had to economize the way they were living.

Rachel said one of the biggest steps was to just downsize everything. Their previous house is large enough that half of it goes unused. It also takes a lot of time to clean.

They then packed their stuff, sold most of them, and moved into a smaller house.

Fortunately for the couple, Rachel’s parents allowed them to live on their land. This took off a big chunk of capital when they decided to build a metal house.

The house is a bungalow-type cabin with one bedroom. And while it was way smaller than their previous house, the couple shared with GoDownsize that it has everything they need and will ever need.

Upon entering, you’ll first notice the dining-kitchen area and the living area.

Their living area doubles as a bedroom since they only have one bedroom in the house. It can be used by guests or when someone needs a separate area to sleep.

To maximize storage space they used ottomans that can be used as trunks. They also “kid-proofed” the living area by elevating the TV and storage spaces for electronics.

Their kitchen is compact but highly functional.

It has a good surface area for most cooking tasks. The kitchen bar also functions as their main dining area but the kids have their own smaller and lower tables too.

One of the rooms is reserved for the kids’ play area.

This room was well-thought-out. First, it has a large reading chair where kids can read a book in comfort.

It also has a loft where the kids can hang out and a Lego space, complete with a Lego board. It also has a shelf where they can display their creations.

On to utility, they also have a room that Jared considers the most awkward.

It has a toilet area where people can do their “numbered businesses” and the laundry area. Right above is the shelf where they keep board games and other toys.

They have one bedroom where the five of them sleep. The couple’s queen-sized bed sits in the middle while the kids’ single beds flank theirs.

For other things, they also have an outdoor shed.

As a homeschooling family, the Latigos have a small shed that serves as a general catch-all to a lot of things. The shed houses different school supplies and toys that are properly labeled and classified.

The house might not have your usual configuration but the Latigos shared that their house works for them and for their needs.

It’s all about living debt free while being comfortable.
