When you’ve got more dreams of a lush garden than you do space, you’ve got to get creative.
That’s exactly what one clever gardener decided to do, turning a small patch of green into a vertical wonderland.
“The hair is up, you know what that means,” she quips, signaling the start of a project that’s about to transform her garden. But first, coffee.
Wandering through her garden, she introduces us to her plan: building trellises out of ladder mesh, a material she snagged for less than three bucks.
“I never pay more than like 275,” she shares, a hint of pride in her voice for the bargain find.

“These arches right here,” she points out, “are made out of cattle panel, but these,” she gestures to another set, “are made out of ladder mesh.”

“All you have to do is bend them like this,” she demonstrates, folding the mesh with ease.

“Versus using cattle panel, these are much sturdier,” she explains, though she admits the ladder mesh requires a bit more elbow grease to shape into trellises.
As she starts to assemble her trellises, her commentary is both instructional and peppered with personal anecdotes.
“I just spilled to this one about two days ago,” she laughs, admitting to the trial and error that comes with any DIY project.
But she’s undeterred, her sights set on creating something both beautiful and functional.
“I have trellised things like cantaloupes, cucumbers, watermelon,” she says, listing off the fruits of her labor from seasons past.
While her style of gardening is all about making do with the space she has, it’s also about creating a garden that defies expectations.
“They look really beautiful whenever they’re filled out and in use,” she adds, a note of anticipation in her voice for what this season will bring.
The process, she assures, takes about 20 minutes per trellis, a small investment for the payoff of having a garden that reaches towards the sky.
“It’s actually really inexpensive,” she notes while doing the math out loud for us.
It’s clear she’s got a knack for this, turning a few dollars’ worth of materials into the backbone of her garden’s vertical expansion.
As the project comes together, her satisfaction is adorably enjoyable.
“They still draw your eye up, which makes the garden look a little bit bigger than it really is,” she observes, stepping back to admire her handiwork.
It’s a transformation, turning limited ground space into an aerial display of greenery.
“I can’t keep growing out; I have a limited space, so the only way I can go now is up.”
It’s a sentiment many gardeners can relate to, but through her ingenuity and a bit of wire, she’s turned that limitation into an opportunity.
