When the fixer-upper crew came to start construction, they noticed that the traditional barn had already converted the second story into a little apartment and the bottom floor was arranged as a garage and storage space. This made it easy to set the foundation since the apartment already featured two bedrooms and a small kitchen.

It’s almost impossible to tell the similarities after the transformation. The barn looks very classy and welcoming to all those that set eyes on it. Chip and Joanna had been anticipating working with their friends, the Meeks. Chip and I have done renovations for our dear friends the meek family several times before and we have always enjoyed working with them and couldn’t wait to get our hands on this project,” Joanna posted on her blog called At Home. “I was excited when they decided to be on Fixer Upper, because they’re always ready and willing to take on exciting and unexpected projects others wouldn’t typically think about tackling.”

The team brainstormed several ideas and determined that it made more sense to keep certain features like the kitchen. Other amenities such as the garage, needed to be revamped and altered to fit the blueprint. All that was needed was for the crew to execute the plan as intended.

Other changes that Joanna had in mind included new doors and windows as well as extras that open up the kitchen. The idea was to abandon the concept of a barn and construct an apartment with a garage that would be comfortable, relaxing, and cozy. These might seem like small things, but Joanna wanted to make sure she didn’t skimp out on anything important. Given the crew’s expertise, they made sure no page was left unturned.

Joanna knew that one of the first additions she had to make in order to have the barn look more like a home was to have access to a second floor. She decided that it was best to build a staircase in the interior of the home and also build a study room underneath the stairs. The small addition of the floating desk and shelves make it a perfect area to engage in thoughtful work.

Most of the storage space in the garage was laid out on the bottom floor. The original dimensions were not suitable since they were too large. To make the space as efficient as possible, The garage had to be redone.

The old garage was transformed into a marvelous living room. The open space offers natural lighting and fresh new airspace. While the furniture compliments the dimensions, it’s the beautiful windows around the room that give the space eye candy.

The interior was redesigned to offer more open space. It is now looking more classy and stylish in a way it didn’t look before. The country aesthetic still lingers in the design and is highlighted by the barn-style double doors.

The center of downstairs is the family gathering room. The color white really emanates proudly from every corner of the room; giving it a very clean look. Now it’s starting to feel more like home!

This large space was intended to be renovated as the primary dining room. It has enough room to fit the cabinetry and countertops needed as well as provide space enough for cookers and stovetops. In addition, Joanna made sure to allocate the right additions in order to make this room one of the highlights of the project. You won’t believe how much this space has changed!

The decorative dining room is so elegant it could be a part of an 19th-century Victorian mansion. This 17-ft table fits pretty much any member of the family with enough space for more. “The Meeks love to host family and friends for dinner parties for this unique and inspiring space is perfect for their lifestyle,” said Joanna.

The little details are what makes this fabulous dining set a spectacle to look at. The bold black chairs compliment the soft light touch of the baby plants resting in metal pots. It all comes together to give it a very lavish look!

Jimmy Don, joanna’s metal artist, was commissioned to craft a handwritten version of Lexia’s favorite quote into a creative wall decoration that will be loved for and appreciated for a very long time. The saying read, “They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts.”

The entire downstairs area is now a warm place of communion for the family. After adding the final touches, the clean and polished look sparkle for all to see. The space will no doubt harbor many treasured memories with the family.

One of the most important pieces of design for Joanna was the doors. “My friend Dustin at Anderson Glass did an amazing job of making my design vision come to life with these doors. The design ties into the modern farm design I incorporated in the living area. shiplap was installed throughout the house along with hardwood floors for clean lines and the fresh cameras to build on.” Joanna stated.

The room also has a super comfortable bed fit for any young child. It’s truly the perfect space for Josh to enjoy his time! He will appreciate the work done as he grows older.

At first, the kitchen didn’t look like it would be useful. It’s extremely tiny with limited space, so it would be really uncomfortable with the given conditions. The team decided it was time for a big renovation of the kitchen.

After much working dedication, the kitchen space looks amazing! It has wide-open spaces where one can easily cook without feeling like the walls are caving in. This is exactly what the family was looking for when they decided to make this project into a welcoming home.

The kitchen comes with new wood cabinets and concrete countertops. The contrast of bold wooden floors with light drawers really paint the space in an interesting way. Even Gordon Ramsay wouldn’t hesitate to cook in this kitchen!

The vent in the kitchen was made by a specialist in order for it to look like metal. Joanna made sure to pay a lot of attention to detail in order to cater to the families’ needs. “I chose to add this mobile wooden item to the kitchen to break up the black and white, and add some extra functionality to the room,” Joanna said.

One of the cutest additions to the kitchen was a coffee bar. The bar makes fantastic use of the petite space since you can use the shelves for storage. The coffee machine rests atop the counters in order to serve the family’s caffeine craving.

This beautiful Dutch door is the entrance to a stunning balcony that gives a view towards a lake and a greenbelt. It’s the perfect scenery to enjoy a nice cup of coffee or just simply appreciate the beauty of nature. This addition to the house is easily one of the biggest perks.

For a more intimate dining experience, The family has set aside a secondary dining space for smaller gatherings. the decorations make the area much more elegant than the primary dining room. This is certainly a very cozy space that makes the shared moments here even more cherishable.

The table is clearly much smaller than the primary dining table. It only fits six people but at least you’ll be able to have more meaningful conversations. Those who eat here will be much closer together and develop a more communal experience with everyone.

The reclining room features plenty of furniture such as couches and chairs. It’s also fitted with an interesting metal clock at the far wall with no hour nor minute hand. The wall decorations make it a very intriguing space.

Joanna wanted to make sure the Meek family was comfortable and happy in their new home. She really went out of her way to make sure the space was appropriate and designed specifically for that goal. It was all about family and how that could be reflected in a home. “I wanted to make this cozy space a practical place for them to gather together on a quiet weekend,” Joanna stated about this upstairs room.

None of the process felt too rushed and everything felt like it was coming together neatly. The transformation of the barn into a new home with exactly as everyone envisioned. “As a little addition,” Joanna mentioned, “We created a small fenced garden on the side of the home to appeal to Lexia’s love gardening.”

What was once a barn is now a spectacular, family-oriented home. The many memories that will be created here will definitely last a life time. Many kudos to Chip and Joanna and crew who took great time and effort to make this project a reality. You would never think this place used to be a barn!

The journey has been long, but totally worth it. The Meek family will now get to enjoy their new home with all the wonderful additions made to it.
