Blueberries are one of the most delicious fruits in the world. They are the perfect addition to breakfast and taste great in smoothies. Given this demand for blueberries, the prices can, at times, be rather pricey.

Fortunately, there’s an easy way to grow blueberries at home. Here’s what you need to know.

Be Picky!

There are different types of blueberries, and knowing what works best in your environment is instrumental in successfully Some berries survive better in humid climates, while others prefer colder temperatures, so it’s important to find the tree that works best for your home!

Be wary of the soil

For amateur gardeners, checking the acidity of the soil is not something we immediately think to check, but it’s actually important! The general rule of thumb is to keep it somewhere between 4 and 5. If your garden isn’t ideal, consider buying soil and putting the plant in a pot!

Know how to plant them!

Location, location, location. Your berries will require plenty of sunlight and good soil. If you are planting more than one, make sure to leave around 5-feet between each bush. If you need to use a pot, choose an 18-inch pot.

Protect them

A lot of predators may go after your plant. Protect them by surrounding your plant with bamboo sticks or covering them with a food-grade net.

Enjoy them!

Blueberry bushes can produce fruit for up to 20 years, which is pretty incredible! Pruning the bushes are incredibly important and this should be done every couple of years! Be warned though- pruning means you won’t get blueberries that year, so arrange accordingly!

Know when they are at their best

Plant the bushes in the early spring, so that the berries are done by July. Yum!
