Due to the pandemic, many people discovered their passions that they never knew they had.
Some people discovered their passion for gardening; some found their love for baking, and others, their talent in restoring old pieces of furniture.
According to Jay Zaluski, the owner of the YouTube Channel Flippingdrawers, he’s a full-time healthcare worker with a passion for restoring and doing furniture makeovers.
He started upcycling old pieces of furniture to stay sane during the start of the lockdown, and it became his passion. His 35.2K subscribers love his work, and we do too.
Last month, he uploaded a new project.
It was all about an old art deco dresser that he found in the marketplace. The owners gave it away for free, so he took it and decided to restore and give it a new life, using wooden blinds!
First, he explained the condition of the art dresser.
Jay said that a lot of the veneer was missing, and the remaining was already peeling off. It also has a big hole on the side. He loved the art deco look and didn’t want to hide the age of the drawer.
He wanted to keep it that way. He wanted to use wood to upcycle it, but since wood is expensive, he found three wooden blinds in the marketplace for only £3.
Jay started removing the hardware and boiled them in vinegar to help remove all the paint and dirt. Then, the topcoat was next, and this was the most challenging part of the restoration because it didn’t want to come off.
Then, he used three or more paint strippers and other tools to remove the paint.
The remaining veneer came off effortlessly. Next, he then proceeded by removing the legs of the dresser because he wanted to change it into something more sophisticated.
Jay also added some support on the bottom of the dresser.
He cleaned the wooden blinds and allowed them to dry. While waiting, he sanded and repaired some parts of the dresser.
Once dried, he removed them from the strings and started putting the wooden blinds on the dresser.
From here, you can already see the beauty of his idea.
Once done, he added color to the new parts of the dresser using high-pressure spray paint.
The wooden blinds were beautiful, but they looked new. That was a problem because Jay wanted to keep the antique look, so he applied more layers of the color.
Jay reinstalled the mirror and the new legs, which by the way looked stunning. Lastly, he added the new drawer handles.
There was also a golden horse centerpiece.
The overall look was phenomenal! You would think it’s worth thousands of dollars because of its antique yet sophisticated look.
Don’t be afraid to try and don’t hesitate to follow your dreams, just like Jay, who found out his passion and talent through upcycling and restoration.
