Getting your kids to do chores doesn’t have to be torturous to for you or your children. Your children can learn the virtues of hard work and responsibility while still having fun.
Here are 12 tricks for getting your kids to do chores:
Teach Them Something
Try to making your chore into a teachable moment or fun lesson. If you want them to help out in the garden, tell them you’re going to show them how plants grow. While they are helping you in the garden, explain to them why you are doing what you’re doing and how it’s helping the plants to grow.
If you want them to walk the dog, explain to them how important is it that your dog gets exercise so he can stay happy and healthy.
Turn It Into a Contest
Turning chores into a contest can make chore-time a lot of fun. Have your kids see who can clean their rooms or get ready for bed the fastest. You can even create a chart and reward your kids with gold stars. Whoever has the most stars at the end of the week will get a special treat.
Hold Things Dear To Them Hostage
It sounds terrible but it will work. Withhold the wifi password in exchange for doing some chores.
Offer Them a Bad Choice
Give them two choices. Make your first choice the chore and the second choice something worse than the chore. If they are younger and haven’t caught on yet, they’ll choose the chore and will be happy to do it.
Create a Scavenger Hunt
Hide small prizes throughout your house and give them a clue to find each one after they complete a chore.
Let Picky Eaters Roll the Dice
If your child is giving you a hard time about eating, let them roll the dice to see how many more bites they need to eat. It will be a distraction and will give them a sense of control over the situation while you get them to continue eating.
