Not only is it an amazing look to spice up your living space, but also very sustainable.

With some paint and plastic bottles, you can kickstart a vibrant vertical garden today.

1. Grab your bottles.

The video, it shows him with three bottles.

You’re welcome to use as many or how little you want.

One bottle will make one flower pot.

He uses one-liter bottles in the video, but I’m sure you can use whatever size you wish.

You’re going to grab a box cutter or something sharp enough to remove the labels from your bottle.

Make sure to get it all of it off.

2. Outline the top, bottom, and between them with a permanent marker.

With your permanent marker of choice, you will outline two lines, one on top and the other on the bottom.

You can use the picture from the video as a reference.

These are going to be part of your guidelines for cutting.

Using the ruler as a guide, make a straight line to connect the two circles you previously drew before.

Then you’re going to repeat that process, making those lines all around the bottle.

3. Now use the boxcutter to begin the cut and use the scissors to finish cutting the longer lines.

You’ll cut a slit along the long lines with your boxcutter.

Make sure you don’t cut below that first bottom line you drew.

This is going to help you start the cutting process without making any mistakes.

Use the scissors to finish cutting the lines up to the top line you drew first.

You’ll repeat this process with all the bottles.

This will create small slits all up the bottles.

4. Before folding the bottle, pour rubbing alcohol on a towel and clean up the marker.

You’ll then drill about an inch diameter circle into all the bottoms of the bottles.

Make sure to take your time when you do this, so you don’t get hurt.

5. Now, fold the bottle and shape it into a pot.

You will fold the top of the bottle into the middle of the cut slits.

Then you’ll begin flipping all the slits around to create the lantern shape.

It’ll look something like shown above. Then screw the cap back onto the top.

6. Drill small holes in the top, then decorate.

You can get spray paint at your local hardware store.

Using whatever colors you chose, carefully spray paint your pot.

Attach something to hold it so you won’t get your hands dirty, and it will be easier to turn it around getting a spotless paint job.

7. Let it dry, and drill small holes to insert the string to hold them.

Once it’s had the time to dry completely you’re going to drill two small holes across from each other on the top.

Get two strings and make a little knot on the end.

String each one through the drilled holes.

Then take the ruler and measure each string marking it at 27 centimeters.

Put another knot through it and take that string to repeat the process with another lantern.

Make sure the top of the bottle faces down, creating the perfect little pouch for your plant friends to sit in.

Put some soil in them, and then put the plants of your choice into your new beautiful upcycled flower pot.

What do you plant in a vertical garden?

According to Miracle-Gro, if you’re looking to plant flowers, it’s best to choose annual flowers or vines because they don’t require much soil, if any.

Plus, you can start fresh with different flowers every year.

Another option is planting edible plants that have shallow roots, like herbs.

You can also choose among various foliage that live in dryer conditions, like succulents, or more shad-loving plants, like a fern.

If you don’t have much outdoor space and your garden is indoors, plants that thrive in low light conditions are a perfect option, such as orchids or air plants.
