A peaceful home away from it all is secretly every person’s dream, no matter how accustomed they are to city living or the country lifestyle. Imagine the serenity of living in a home that promises a spectacular view of the sea, surrounded by tall trees.
This is what Bruce Winckler gets to enjoy every morning as he wakes up: tranquility and attractive scenery.
Far from ordinary, Bruce’s whimsical home is a place that will trigger curiosity and delight in both children and grown-ups because of how unique it is and how absolutely perfect its location is.
Bruce is the proud owner of Winckler Cottage, a masterpiece right on the shores of Vancouver Island, British Columbia.
Playfully nicknamed the “Hansel and Gretel Cottage” by Bruce’s friends, the small, charming home brings a whole new meaning to tiny living.
Constructed by Tim Lindberg and Daniel Huscroft from Lindcroft Custom Dwellings, the cottage boasts incredible details despite its humble size. Just look at the curves of the roof, the mushroom-shaped metal vent cap, the patio floors, and even the door handles!
It’s really all in the details – details that definitely took time to complete. Clearly, the end result was well worth the wait.
The owner of the cottage showed the quaint indoor space and comically described an incredible spot by the window as something that makes him feel like he’s living in a fishbowl when boats pass by.
Still, he is quite satisfied with this storybook cottage even though the interiors don’t match the facade.
Contemporary yet functional, each area serves its purpose well.
How easy the clean-up must be! Inside the cottage is an L-shaped kitchen that allows Bruce to have everything within reach. His only regret is choosing not to have an oven built. Initially, the cottage was only intended for short visits but despite the small dissatisfaction, Bruce shares how he can still make do without the oven and that the entire space achieves both form and function.
The living room is perfect for relaxing and staying warm with its attractive stone fireplace. Then there’s also a bathroom with all the essentials, and stairs that lead to a sleeping loft. (You’ll love how the stairs double as storage space!)
All in all, the place measures about 600 square feet and allows Bruce to live comfortably, enjoy his privacy, and be in the midst of nature.
Bruce says he sometimes feels like he’s living in a fairytale.
One would definitely think the same, too! The Brothers Grimm would probably have this type of cottage in the pages of their books. It could very well be something straight out of J.R.R. Tolkien’s imagination, too.
Winckler Cottage is just perfect. Small, cozy, and low-maintenance, it is undeniably a magical dwelling that brings a smile to the faces of those who lay eyes on it.
