Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic dental technique that involves swishing a tablespoon of oil (typically coconut, sunflower, or sesame oil are used) in your mouth on an empty stomach for 20 minutes. You then spit it out and brush your teeth. A good tip, when spitting the oil out, do so in your toilet, as doing it in your sink, can clog the drain with time. The practice of oil pulling, draws out toxins in your body, mainly to improve oral health but also to improve your overall health.

Aside from oil pulling’s ability to whiten your teeth, freshen breath, and kill bacteria roaming around on gums and throat, there are several other very important health benefits. Just because oil pulling is done in your mouth, doesn’t mean that it doesn’t target the rest of your body. That is what makes oil pulling so intriguing, and popular.

But, how exactly is it that swishing a little bit of oil in your mouth reaches out all around your body, essentially cleaning it out? Oil pulling reduces inflammation by absorbing the body’s toxins, better known as ama. It pulls out pesticides, fertilizers, chlorine, ammonia, which are toxins that are found in the air, water, and food we consume. They’re absorbed daily. When you’re oil pulling, it targets toxins circulating in the tissues lining the oral cavity, as well as the toxins in the local blood supply found in the tongue, which is one of the most vascular organs in the body.

It decreases the amount of work our body has to do to function. As a result, this leaves us feeling vibrant and energized.

3. Detoxifies The Body

It’s inevitable, germs always make their way into our bodies. They cause inflammation and can lead to illnesses. And, the number one spot for germs to enter your body is the mouth. So, it makes sense that removing the germs at their source, prevents them from spreading elsewhere. Hence, putting your body through a complete detox through oil pulling.

4. Aids Hormonal Changes

The cleaner your body is inside, the better your hormones behave. Therefore, oil pulling is a great and easy way to keep that body detoxed, making hormones happy and performing to the best of their abilities.

5. Reduces Headaches

Toxic stress on the body can bring on headaches and migraines. It’s your body’s way of asking for some time out to recover. By ridding yourself of bacteria from the body through oil pulling, headaches can be avoided.

6. Keeps The Skin Clear

By removing toxins from the body, that would otherwise make it into the bloodstream, means skin has a chance to glow. If you have any kinds of rashes or skin issues, you’ll see them clear up gradually once you start oil pulling. Eventually, it will clear it up completely and give your flawless skin.

7. Oral Hygiene

Oil pulling greatly reduces your chances of getting tooth cavities and rids you of all bad breath causing bacteria. It also removes the Streptococcus mutant bacteria (which is known to be a key player in tooth decay) and targets plaque-induced gingivitis.
