Designing or renovating your home should be an exciting and happy occasion. Unfortunately, home remodeling projects often go wrong … horribly wrong.
We found 50 home designs and renovation projects that completely missed their mark. From toilets in the kitchen, to fur staircases, to horribly misplaced appliances, these amazingly awful interior designs range from mildly alarming to blatantly disturbing.
Butterfly toilet
Absolutely not! I apologize, but I cannot bring myself to use that toilet seat. Who would want any form of insect, even if they’re just beautiful butterfly images, in such proximity to their… you know what? Certainly not someone with a vivid imagination like mine.
Fireplace in shower
Have you ever found yourself needing to take a cold shower for some reason? It’s quite unpleasant, to say the least. I can’t help but wonder if that’s what prompted this individual to consider installing a fireplace in the shower.
Piano range
You know, this list is a treasure trove of oddities. However, the most peculiar by far has to be that piano-turned-range hood hanging on the kitchen wall.
Misplaced door
The property has potential for improvement, but its standout attribute is the inclusion of a mother-in-law suite. Additionally, it offers a separate entrance to a private deck.
Dungeon bed
If you discovered the bed of a man you were interested in, how would you react? Would the style of his bed influence your decision to continue the relationship?
Misplaced kitchen island
The conversation with the contractor went like this: “I’m set on having an island here,” I insisted. The contractor replied, “I understand, but those are essential weight-bearing joists.” Despite his explanation, I repeated, “I still want the island there.” He patiently reiterated the importance of the joists. Yet, I persisted, “I really want it there.” Eventually, the contractor, exasperated, surrendered, saying, “Alright, as you wish.”
Chevy bed
The aesthetic appeal and practicality of using part of an old Chevy pickup as a bed frame is debatable. While some might find it an innovative and charming choice, others might question its suitability and functionality as a piece of bedroom furniture.
Freaky powder room
There might be a strategic reason behind this unusual choice. If the goal is to discourage guests from spending too much time in your powder room, adopting a design that is both bizarre and slightly intimidating could certainly be effective.
Sink mantel
Firstly, this design seems tailored for someone exceptionally tall, possibly a basketball player over 7 feet, as the average person would struggle to use that mirror. Secondly, the decision to install a mantle in a bathroom is quite unconventional and raises questions about the practicality and aesthetics of such a choice.
Kitchen Jacuzzi
When did the concept of open-plan living extend to such extremes? Placing a Jacuzzi tub in the kitchen seems like a novel idea, but it’s hard to tell if it’s truly ingenious or just peculiar. Alternatively, it could be viewed as installing a kitchen within a bathroom space. This design choice certainly blurs traditional boundaries between living areas.
Upside down door
Are you concerned that taller individuals might peer into your home through a glass door? Well, this design has outsmarted them!
Overwhelming kitchen
Have you ever experienced the discomfort of turning on a light in a dark room early in the morning? Entering this room would have a similar effect. Most people would likely find themselves instinctively closing their eyes due to its intense brightness, further accentuated by the presence of a checkered tile floor.
Stairway to the basement
This room appears to be a wine cellar, though its purpose is a bit unclear. If the intention is to discourage people from staying too long, the interior design is spot on. The figures painted on the wall seem more like they’re fleeing in terror rather than joyfully singing.
Furry staircase
Is this an oversized version of the scratching posts that cat owners use to deter their cats from clawing the furniture? It seems like it might be a life-size replica.
Balcony pool
Is this a serious lapse in judgment? The design choice here isn’t just poor; it’s potentially life-threatening for anyone in or under that pool. Balconies have specific weight limits, and this setup almost certainly surpasses that limit!
Kitchen chaos
If you weren’t already overwhelmed, living in such a chaotic environment could quickly become too much to handle. It’s the kind of setting that might leave you feeling stressed and unsettled in no time.
Staircase bathtub
Who believed this was a wise decision? Given that a significant number of home injuries occur while exiting the bath, why would anyone design it to be exponentially more hazardous? Navigating out of this bathtub seems to require the skills of a circus performer.
Fugly kitchen
Firstly, yellow is not my preferred color, especially not for a kitchen. But that’s a side point. This house, with its unique kitchen, seems tailored for owners who intend to stay indefinitely, as it might be challenging to find buyers who appreciate such a distinct style. While there can be practical reasons for elevating a dishwasher, in this case, the execution is unattractive and lacks aesthetic appeal.
Barnyard room
Adjusting to city life can be challenging for someone accustomed to the vast open spaces and barnyard animals of rural areas. However, it’s possible to find a balance. You can create a living space that combines elements of both the countryside and the urban environment, enjoying the best of both worlds.
Fancy bathroom
Amidst the shock of this bathroom’s design, I almost overlooked a peculiar detail. Clothes are hanging in the windows, seemingly integrated as part of the window dressings. Why would someone choose to do this?
Flintstone house
Who resides in this space? Is it meant for cave dwellers, or perhaps it’s reminiscent of the Flintstones’ home? Could it be where Pebbles and Bam Bam, now adults, live as a married couple? One thing is for certain: the door frames in this place must be exceptionally sturdy to withstand such pressure.
Toilet spa
Take a moment to relax and soak your feet here; it’s sure to leave you feeling refreshed. However, if there’s a man in the house, you might want to be wary of his accuracy. The thought alone is enough to make one shudder!
Moldy bedroom
Is anyone else finding it difficult to breathe in this room? The air quality seems quite poor. It’s baffling to think who would choose to decorate with what appears to be mold. The look is both unsettling and unappealing.
Barbie’s house?
Could this be a life-sized rendition of Barbie’s playhouse, or perhaps a Disney Princess’s abode? The walls alone are quite striking, but when you add the sheer curtains and multicolored cushions, it resembles a scene where a box of crayons has been upended in a vibrant, chaotic burst.
Hair stairs
These eerie stairs ascend to an unknown destination, leaving one to wonder about the inhabitant of this house. Could it be someone with a peculiar hobby, like collecting hair to weave into carpets? The whole setup is quite baffling!
Lady lamp
In the background, there’s a subtle pink butterfly adding a touch of delicacy. Dominating the foreground is an unusual, large lady-shaped lamp, ambiguously holding either a peculiar purse or a boombox. Also noteworthy are her distinctive necklace and the flag she’s associated with.
Forest kitchen
I’m at a loss for words regarding this eyesore, so feel free to discuss it amongst yourselves. I need to take a break and gaze at something pleasing — or perhaps resort to metaphorical eye-bleaching. I’ll return once I’ve regained my composure and my brain is back on track.
Kitchen island mistake
This kitchen features a large island in the center, which is great, but it also has legs and feet protruding enough to be a constant tripping hazard for anyone trying to navigate around it. It seems like an accident just waiting to happen.
Rubik’s Cube kitchen
Your kitchen should ideally evoke feelings of comfort and tranquility. However, this “Rubik’s Cube” themed kitchen seems more likely to induce feelings of stress and tension. Interestingly, it appears that the dogs are the ones who find enjoyment in it!
Wall dishwasher
Let’s set aside the unattractive kitchen design for a moment and focus on the dishwasher embedded in the wall. Yes, there’s actually a dishwasher built into the wall. Consider your usual position when loading a dishwasher, especially since the door opens outward, occupying around 3 feet of space. Does this design imply that people have to stand on the countertops to load this dishwasher?
Seaside room
Captain and his partner are avid lovers of the sea. They relish sleeping to the sound of crashing waves and beneath the starry sky. And for added reassurance, they always keep a sextant close by.
Living room coat room?
This space resembles a reception area, where you might expect a hostess to greet you and offer to take your coat. It raises an interesting question: what’s the appropriate etiquette in such a setting? Is it customary to leave a tip when you’re a guest in someone’s home?
Floral bathroom
Is the entire bathroom enveloped in carpet, velour blankets, or towels? It’s hard to discern exactly what it is. But, when it comes down to it, does it really make a difference? The overarching theme here seems to be a profound affection for floral patterns.
Home theater kitchen?
It’s unclear what this room is intended for, but it seems like it could be someone’s interpretation of a home theater. Setting aside the presence of appliances for a moment, the curtains, the screen, and the object resembling an Oscar statuette do give off a movie theater vibe. Additionally, there’s something hanging from the ceiling that could either be a projector or, curiously, a vacuum cleaner.
Bathroom fishing
While some enjoy reading in the bathroom, it seems others might indulge in the imaginative activity of pretending to ice fish while seated on the toilet, complete with the illusion of scattered dead fish around them. It’s certainly a unique concept.
Nightmare bathroom
Despite its vivid orange color, this bathroom feels somewhat plain. Enhancing it with the right selection of towel bars, towels, and some striking rugs could really elevate its appearance. And the bare window certainly needs some attention too.
Torture bath
Imagine having to use this bathroom daily. The unattractive walls are just the beginning. Take a look at that bathtub – it’s all rough and jagged. It’s hard to find someone who would enjoy the risk of getting scratched or pierced while bathing. But then again, different strokes for different folks.
Bedroom seating
It’s unclear why there’s a raised seating platform next to the bed. It has a somewhat eerie vibe to it!
Cow kitchen
Real estate agents often emphasize the importance of kitchens and bathrooms in a home’s resale value. Have you noticed the abundance of pictures showcasing these spaces? It really makes you wonder what goes through people’s minds when they design these areas.
Misplaced stove
When you’re considering remodeling your kitchen, it’s wise to consult a professional, especially if you’re not familiar with the intricacies of kitchen design. A professional can provide valuable insights, such as the availability of slide-in ranges suitable for specific layouts, or even suggest alternatives like a separate stovetop and an oven drawer for more efficient space utilization.
Hideous kitchen island
You might suspect this is a product of Photoshop wizardry, but it’s actually genuine. The kitchen island appears as if it’s made from a fragmented piece of granite. And then, there’s the curious presence of basketballs on the counter in the background – what’s the story there?
‘Under the Sea’ bathroom
I imagine that a bathroom with a Jacuzzi tub should exude a sense of serenity and relaxation. It should be soothing. However, despite the reputation of blue as a calming color, this particular bathroom oddly triggers anxiety in me. I can’t help but wonder, are there sharks lurking somewhere in here?
Living room firepit
Initially, I had the impression that this was a courtyard – you know, an outdoor space leading to the front door of the house. However, it turns out this area is actually inside the front entrance. It does seem a bit unusual to have a firepit blocking the front door, doesn’t it?
Unwanted fireplace
It seems like you’re not a fan of the fireplace. There are probably more elegant solutions to address it, such as removing the mantle and concealing the stone.
Anxiety cabinets
You know that famous painting by Edvard Munch called “The Scream”? Strangely, that’s the first thing that came to mind when I saw this kitchen, thanks to those purple and blue streaks. Ironically, the painting is known to represent anxiety, which is exactly the feeling those cabinets evoke in me.
Off-kilter home
Are you referring to the DNA strand columns? The fact that they aren’t aligned with the door? It does seem like there’s a lack of symmetry here. Even the house number and porch light don’t appear to be centered. And yes, I agree, the door doesn’t seem to match the overall style of the house.
Home sweet … bath?
I’ll confess that after a long day, I do enjoy relaxing in a hot bath, perhaps with a glass of wine, and I might even entertain the thought, “I could live here.” However, the idea of writing “home” on the walls is definitely not to my liking.
Plumbing issue
Well, it appears that the installer of this bathtub made an effort, at least the faucet is going into the tub. However, I can’t help but wonder whether they ran out of longer faucets or if this is a miscalculation on their part.
Misplaced fridge
I’m genuinely perplexed about why the homeowner thought it was necessary, or even a good idea, to position the refrigerator in the middle of the room. Frankly, it might have been a better choice to sacrifice some counter space for the fridge and instead place an island in that spot.
High Up
I’m still trying to wrap my head around how the residents of this place manage to park in their garage. Do they happen to have the last name “Duke” and drive a 1969 Dodge Charger? It’s quite baffling how this design choice came to be.
Missing the Point
It seems like this homeowner should consider revising their security strategy. Having a locked gate is effective only when complemented by a sturdy surrounding fence. In this particular situation, it doesn’t appear to be effective at all.
