“I had a very specific area in mind for these poppies: the strip of land between the street and the sidewalk. I’ve heard it called a double strip, and I absolutely love that name,” Baetanical shared, inviting us into their thought process with a blend of charm and wit.

Choosing the right seeds was a crucial step in this horticultural adventure.

Baetanical was not just selecting flowers but curating a cast for a botanical performance that would last all season.

The choice fell on Flanders poppies and bachelor’s buttons, a duo destined to dazzle.

For the bachelor buttons, Baetanical went with a tall variety so they would stand out among the poppies with their own bursts of vibrant color.

As anyone can see, it was a very good choice.

One added benefit to Baetnical sharing his video is all the sterling advice in the comments.

A sprinkle of gardening wisdom was shared by a viewer that many attested to:

“Just a little tip for anyone else that wants to make a hand-sewn poppy/wildflower bed: MIX SEEDS WITH SAND. This makes them so much easier to sew, you can see what ground you’ve covered with the sand, and it ensures seed coverage is more consistent. Hope this helps :) loved the video.”

Another enthusiast chimed in, “Oh wow! So simple yet it’s a game changer for me! Thank u!!!”

As the garden took shape, the collection of plants evolved into a community space, a backdrop for selfies, and a source of joy for passersby.

“You know the best part of growing flowers is not just for yourself but for other people to enjoy too. When you said people are taking selfies of it, that made me smile. Such a good feeling. Thank you for this video and I’m looking forward to grow my own poppies this year,” a comment read, echoing the sentiment that Baetanical’s garden was a gift to the neighborhood.

The journey was not without its learning curves.

Baetanical navigated the challenges of clay soil and the delicate balance of watering with ingenuity and grace.

A viewer offered sage advice: “I don’t know if you’ve cut or dug them up yet, but you should do chop and drop with these poppies. That way the taproot stays in the ground, breaks down, and helps to loosen the clay soil over time 🙇🏻 Also, instead of weeding, just cover the weeds with a sheet of plain cardboard and mulch on top of it. More organic matter gets added this way!”

As the season progressed, the garden flourished under Baetanical’s watchful, admiring eye.

“That’s amazing those big plants come from those tiny seeds. The bachelor’s button was the perfect combination with the poppies! Beautiful!” a viewer remarked, capturing the wonder of nature’s transformations.
