Have you ever dreamed of having an assortment of beautiful planters but practically faint when you see the price? Planters can be very expensive so why not try to make them yourself?
With over 23 million views, this practical DIY planter tutorial is a must-see.
All you need to start this project is a plastic basket, cement, and tape. Yep, that’s it!
Grab your favorite plastic basket or pick one up at the Dollar Store.
It is best to use one with a pattern and choose a size that you prefer. The basket in the tutorial is a nice large bowl-shaped basket with a simple yet stylish pattern.
Next, grab some tape and cover the outside of the basket to create a barrier.
After taping the basket, use some oil to coat the inside of the basket. This will help your finished product to easily slip away from the mold.
Time to mix the cement.
If you’ve never tried to mix cement, you are in for some fun. Apply a thin coat of wet cement to the inside of the basket. Then mix water with one part cement and one part sand to create a thicker mixture.
Take the newly mixed cement and apply it to the inside of the bowl.
Smooth it out with a curved spatula or similar tool.
Once you have smoothed it out, you can grab a knife or sharp tool for carving so the cement is even around all sides.
Use a cloth or damp sponge to clean up the edges of the bowl.
In the video, the artist uses a little water to smooth the edges out.
Use a tool to make a small hole in the bottom of the planter so water can drain from the soil.
All that is left to do is wait and daydream about all the stunning flowers that will be growing in your gorgeous new DIY planter.
It will take 24 hours for the cement to dry so why not take a trip to the garden center and pick up some plants while you wait.
Time for the big reveal.
After waiting all those long hours, it is finally time to see how your planter turned out. Gently turn the bowl upside down until the final product slips from the mold.
Voila. You now have a stunning planter that costs almost nothing.
All you really need now is to dress it up with your favorite paint color.
This super cute project would make a great gift for a loved one or a perfect at-home craft to try with your kids or grandkids.
This super easy planter DIY can also be used to make birdbaths and fairy houses. The sky is really the limit when it comes to creative possibilities.
