I Tried 2024’s Best Silk Pillowcases — Here’s What Happened to My Hair and Face
Jenny Brown
08.01.24

Like the majority of people, I have gone my entire life sleeping on a cotton pillowcase, never having a single thought of there being a better option. This was until the silk pillowcases went viral on the internet a few years back and people were talking about their life changing experiences and results. I will admit, it took me awhile to cave, as I couldn’t justify spending extra money on a pillowcase when I already had a pair that came with my bed sheets.

This article was written in a paid partnership with SBLY.

But, after staying at a friend’s house and sleeping on her silk pillowcase, I realized what all the rage was about, I had to have one! But I didn’t want just any silk pillowcase. If I was going to commit and switch over to silk, I wanted the best option on the market.

And so, I purchased this years top-rated silk pillowcases and tested them all out based on these categories:

  • Material quality
  • Feel on hair and skin
  • Additional features
  • Temperature regulation
  • Value

I also went ahead and took some photos of me using each of the silk pillowcases, just so you know that I really tried them! It can also give you an idea about how they look, how authentic the colors are to what you see online, and more.

My rankings:

  1. Dosaze 100% Mulberry Silk Pillowcase
  2. Slip Silk Pillowcase
  3. Blissy Silk Pillowcase
  4. Pure Care Pure Silk Pillowcase
  5. Honeydew Silk Pillowcase
  6. Lily Silk Pillowcase
  7. Bedsure “Faux Silk” Pillowcase
  8. Suatien Amazon Brand Silk Pillowcase

Are Silk Pillowcases Even Worth It?

Before we get too far into it, let me give you a quick rundown on why so many are making the switch over to silk (and no, I’m not going to make you scroll through an entire “blog” before getting to the “recipe”). Very briefly, silk pillowcases have become popular because they are said to not cause friction that can damage the hair, they absorb less moisture and dirt from the hair and skin, which stops acne-causing bacteria, they’re hypoallergenic, and are natural thermoregulators.

The Bottom Line

Dosaze is a 100% Pure Mulberry Silk pillowcase, and Mulberry Silk is often regarded as the highest quality silk available! Each Silk is also graded A-C, with A being the best quality. The Dosaze pillowcase is graded 22-Momme 6A Grade Mulberry Silk, marking it as the highest and finest quality of silk. Additionally, the “22-Momme” speaks to the density of the pillowcase, with 22 being among the densest weaves. Generally speaking, 22-Momme feels the most luxurious, so overall, the Dosaze is really going for gold here with their material quality.

So, this pillowcase checks all the boxes when it comes to quality! With that being said, you can tell when you run your fingers over the pillowcase that it is the real deal. I rated it a high material quality because it really does feel different than standard pillowcases. The feeling of mulberry silk on the skin and hair is incredible, and there was zero tension on my hair and skin, which is one of the most important things for me.

The coolest part about this pillowcase, besides it being made up of the highest quality silk, is that it’s also made with Silvadur ™ Silver Antimicrobial Treatment. If you haven’t heard about silver being used in pillowcases yet, it’s a newer concept and is the perfect addition to fight acne. In my opinion, this was the real feature that helped the Dosaze stand out from the rest.

As far as temperature regulation, I wouldn’t say this pillowcase (or any of the pillowcases) stand out, I rated them all very similar regarding temperature regulation. If you glide your hand over the pillowcase, you can feel that it is cool to the touch, but I didn’t notice that it actively kept me cool at night. Although I didn’t notice I was being cooled, I didn’t get overheated, so at a minimum, it does the job (which is maybe how it’s actually designed to work; these are just my thoughts!).

Dosaze isn’t the cheapest or most expensive pillowcase; as I mentioned earlier, this is an investment! It is $90 for a Queen size and $100 for a King, but they also offer some of the best bundle options around!

Overall, I’d rate this pillowcase a 10/10. It has everything you’d want in a silk pillowcase, and the silver factor is a major value add. For the price, I think this is a great find.

Features:

  • 60-night sleep trial
  • First-time discount
  • 3-year warranty
  • Free shipping
  • Hidden zipper closure
  • High thread count
  • Cooling
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Good for skin & hair
  • Silver infused fabric

UPDATE (8 months later!): I’ve been sleeping on the Dosaze 100% Mulberry Pillowcase for 8 months now, and it is still the best one. I’m super satisfied with the overall quality and durability of this pillowcase. This has been the best investment for me in terms of improving my hair and skin!

The Bottom Line

Like the Dosaze, the Slip is of highest quality silk, 22 momme 6A Grade Mulberry Silk. Although I can’t tell you why, because the two look the same on paper, the Slip is 1 of the 2 pillowcases that are getting the highest rankings for material quality and feel on the hair and skin. Out of all of the options I tested, Slip is for sure one of the better options. That being said, there were some weaknesses.

It gets a 9/10 for additional features for having a handful of color options, nice packaging (I’m a sucker for good packaging), and the company also offers accessories or other silk products rather that are cool; scrunchies, headbands, turbans, sleep masks, face masks and robes.

While sleeping on the Slip, I did wake up in the middle of the night from being overheated (likely hormonal reasons), but it felt extremely cool (more than the others) enough that it cooled me down significantly faster than I normally cool down. When I wake up with a “hot flash” if that’s what we want to call them, it usually takes 15-30 minutes for me to cool down. But with this pillowcase, I cooled down within 5-10 minutes, which was great and allowed me to get right back to sleep.

The Slips go for $89 for a Queen size and $110 for a King. I rated its value highly as I believe that what you get is worth what you’re paying for it, the only thing that was missing for me that brought this pillowcase down to being #2 was that it didn’t have the silver antimicrobial properties that the Dosaze offers. I think the silver treatment addresses acne and cleanliness, which are both REALLY important to me, so I placed this option number 2.

The Bottom Line

Blissy is another pillowcase made with the highest quality silk, 22 momme 6A Grade Mulberry silk. This feels very similar to the Dosaze and so it also gets a 9/10 for material quality.

I rated it well in how it feels on hair and skin, but there was one thing I noticed that kepy it from top marks. I noticed that my skin slightly sticks to it at night right after I apply my nightly skincare routine.

It receives a lower score for temperature regulation as I didn’t notice anything outstanding regarding temperature.

I rated Blissy pretty well, however, because it offers almost everything you could think of or want; it comes in all needed sizes, has great packaging, offers a ton of different accessories, and has up to 44 different colors to choose from (tailoring to adults and children). Blissy is in a similar price range as Dosaze and Slip, ranging between $90-$110. I rated its value at where I did mostly because of the stick on the skin, which had me questioning this pillowcase slightly.

The Bottom Line

The Pure Care Pure Silk pillowcase is very similar to the Slip pillowcase. I really don’t think I’ll ever get over how great these feel on the skin. Pure Care’s pillow case is also 22 momme 6A Mulberry silk and that quality is reflected in the feel on the hair and the skin.

As far as additional features, two things stood out for this pillow. Although cool, it doesn’t add too much value in this category. The first thing was that with the purchase they included a delicates bag to use when washing. The second was that they promoted the National Sleep Foundation and provided a pamphlet with educational information. The pamphlet shares information regarding the benefits of quality sleep, how many hours of sleep a night you need, tips on creating a sleep-friendly environment, and how to get the best sleep. As a person in my mid-20s, I’ve realized over the last few years that most adults I know are not getting a sufficient amount of sleep or good quality sleep. I like that Pure Care takes this opportunity to educate its consumers!

As far as temperature regulation is concerned, I give this one a similar score to the others, as nothing really stood out. Although this is a great pillowcase overall, I rated it lower in value because of its price. It ranges between $165 and $195, which is expensive compared to the others, which score almost identically in every category.

The Bottom Line

Another 22 momme Grade 6A Mulberry Silk pillowcase, Honeydews Silk Pillowcases scores well for material quality and feel on the hair and skin alongside Slip and Purecare. Although all 5 of the pillowcases reviewed so far have been made of the same quality and type of mulberry silk, I can’t put my finger on why they don’t all feel the same and are not scoring the same across the board.

But these three pillowcases are the softest of them all! This particular pillowcase has a huge downfall though – it’s irregularly shaped. Honeydew designed this pillowcase to custom fit their Essense Side Sleeper Pillows, meaning if you want to use this pillowcase with the same intent the designers had, you’d have to also buy their Essense Side Sleeper Pillow, which is more expensive than the pillowcase itself!

And this pillowcase is on the higher side coming in at $170. With how expensive it is, if it doesn’t check all the boxes it’s just not worth it for me. If I’m going to spend that amount of money, I want it to be exactly what I’m looking for.

Lily Silk

  • Material quality – 6/10
  • Feel on hair and skin – 6/10
  • Additional features – 6/10
  • Temperature regulation – 6/10
  • Value 8/10

Lily Silk is where we start to get into some alternatives if you’re not looking to spend $100+ on a pillowcase. The Lily Silk Pillowcase is our first step away from the 22 Momme Silk Grade 6A Mulberry Silk. Although it is still 6A, this pillowcase downgrades to 19 Momme. This definitely plays into the feel on the hair and skin as I noticed it felt thinner and almost plastic-like compared to the 22 Momme.

To get a better understanding of what 19 vs 22 Momme really is, 22 Momme has approximately 20% more silk per square inch than a 19 Momme pillowcase would. Because the 19 Momme pillowcase is less dense than a 22, it also means that its lifespan is much shorter. 22 Momme is believed to have almost double the lifespan than a 19 momme. This is a perfect representation of how you get what you pay for!

But honestly, if you haven’t started off with a 22-momme pillowcase (or didn’t have one to compare this one with side by side), this Lily Silk pillowcase is the perfect option to bring you into the world of silk. If I hadn’t slept on some of these other pillowcases first, I probably would have never noticed a difference! This pillowcase is also an easy purchase at $40 (this is before the 10% discount if you subscribe to their email system). So overall, I would value it at an 8/10 because I believe it’s a great pillowcase for the price you’re paying!

Bedsure “Faux Silk” – Amazon

  • Material quality – 4/10
  • Feel on hair and skin – 5/10
  • Additional features – 6/10
  • Temperature regulation – 6/10
  • Value 7/10

The Bedsure “Faux Silk” pillowcase comes in last on the list for obvious reasons, it’s not silk! But, that doesn’t mean I’m going to throw it out the window for that. The Bedsure pillowcase was the first one I slept on, so the night before I had been sleeping on a cotton pillowcase.

Just switching from the cotton, I genuinely thought this pillowcase was a major upgrade from the cotton! But, comparing these to the other actual silk pillowcases, I had to score it much lower, giving it a 4/10 for material quality. It does shockingly feel very similar to the Lily Silk Pillowcase though. Feeling the two next to each other, the Lily Silk is just slightly softer than the Bedsure, so I would say they did a good job trying to replicate the feeling of a real silk pillowcase. I gave Bedsure a 6/10 for additional features as it comes in a pack of two and a 6/10 in temperature regulation since it performed the same as the others.

The craziest part about the Bedsure pillowcases is that they come in below $12 on Amazon! Not only is it listed at $11.69, but I got it at 46% off making them only $6.29. Overall, I valued it at a 7/10 as you can’t really find anything cheaper than this and it does a pretty good job at replicating the lower quality silk pillowcases. If you’re questioning silk pillowcases at all, this is the perfect intro for you.

Suatien – Amazon

  • Material quality – 4/10
  • Feel on hair and skin – 5/10
  • Additional features – 5/10
  • Temperature regulation – 6/10
  • Value 6/10

Suatien is another case where you really get what you pay for. Suatien is an Amazon-based brand that sells silk pillowcases very inexpensively. Like, a two-pack for less than $30. While it may seem like a deal, it’s pretty apparent that you aren’t going to get the same level and quality of product as you will from the other, nicer brands on the list.

The listing does claim that the silk is Mulberry silk, but it doesn’t say 100%, and doesn’t even clarify it’s thread quality or weight, which means there could be a lot of shady stuff happening. Technically, it could be 5% silk and the rest polyester, and we just wouldn’t know any better.

There are also some visual differences that likely come from the construction quality. First of all, there is no shine, and it is almost a matte color. One of the attributes of high-quality silk is that it has a great sheen to it, but the Suatien brand does not have that. Also, the feel is distinctly different. To be clear, it doesn’t feel bad, but it does feel noticeably different than the others. This could have an impact on how it feels on your face and hair.

Overall, if you want a cheap pillowcase, this is an ok option. If you want to have an authentic silk pillow case, however, I just can’t recommend this product.
