You look at them just about every day and it’s likely that you’ll use them at least once a week. Even so, you’re probably using them wrong.
Here are 12 kitchen items you’re using the wrong way.
1) Square Container Microwaves
Don’t use square containers in the microwave. The edges attract more energy and get hotter. Round containers help food to heat up more evenly.
2) Spaghetti Spoon
Do you know why there are holes in the middle of your spaghetti soon? You use it to measure pasta. Slide dry pasta into to measure out one serving of pasta.
3) Know Your Knives
You probably have different kinds of knives in your drawer but are you using them properly? Serrated knives are used for bread and soft items like tomatoes and strawberries. Those small paring knives are supposed to be used to cut small items, peel fruits and vegetables, remove seeds, and shrimp veins.
4) Don’t Wet The Wooden Cutting Board
Washing your cutting boards in water can warp your them. It’s best to rub it down with a lemon and coarse salt. The salt will scrub grime away and the lemon will disinfect everything. Wipe clean with a cloth.
5) Proper Dish Placement
There is a right way and wrong way to fill your dishwasher. Dishes with carbohydrate-based residues (potatoes, pasta, and rice) should be put in the center of the machine. Protein-based residues should be placed on the edges of your dishwasher rack.
6) Peel Away
There are actually two reasons you should peel vegetables away from you rather than toward you. It, of course, is safer. But it will also result in a cleaner peel.
7) Food Processor vs Blender
These machines should be used for two very different things. You should avoid using them interchangeably. Food processors should really be used for cutting up solid and dry foods and making chunky sauces.
8) Don’t Touch the Slow Cooker
Your oven and slow cooker are similar when it comes to opening it during cooking. Your slow cooker, like your oven, will experience a big drop in temperature if you take off the lid. It’s best if you leave it closed until it’s finished cooking.
9) Proper Blender Usage
There is a method to the way you should put things in your blender. First put in your liquids, then the tinier ingredients. The largest and toughest items should go in last.
10) Over Drawer
Many people don’t even use their oven drawers. But in some oven models, that drawer can be used as a broiler or for warming, in addition to storage. Check out your oven’s manual.
11) Refrigerator Shelf
We often put our most used items in this drawer, like milk and coffee creamer. It’s best to keep these in the fridge itself because the temperature of the door is unstable since you’re always opening it. It’s best to keep condiments and other items that don’t need to be kept as cold.
12) Garlic Press
Stop peeling your cloves before pressing them. You can add the clove in with its skin. You can pull the skin out of the contraption after you press the garlic.
