Clever design and the use of reclaimed materials is how Derek “Deek” Diedricksen was able to build this incredible 140-square-foot tiny home for just $10,000.

Not only is the home extremely cost-efficient, it only took Derek and a crew four days to build. The home features an entire wall made from recycled windows, each with a colorful lantern inside on display. The ‘Glass House,’ as it’s aptly named, is not hooked up to electricity or water – so, it’s perfect for off-the-grid living.

The wall made of windows blurs the line between indoors and out, making nature the focal point while inside the home.

Derek mixed modern elements like bright pops of color with rustic components like the rough-finished wood used for the window frames. Given that the home is just 140-square-feet, having an entire wall full of windows makes the space feel much larger.

A see-through piece in the flooring exposes the earth beneath the Glass House. Pieces of nature are brought into the home at every opportunity.

The Glass House was intended to be a retreat away from the stresses and noise of the city and daily life. Having elements of nature all around you is the perfect way to relax, unwind, and unplug.

Utilizing vertical space is important in tiny homes – Derek installed a translucent ceiling to give the illusion of even more space and, to once again, invite nature into the home.

From this angle, you can see the Glass House’s ‘great room’ containing a small seating area and kitchenette. There is a small television for entertainment, and the wooden ladder next to it leads up to the sleeping loft.

The unique bed loft has a railing made of tree branches found just outside the home. The entire ceiling of the home is made from a polycarbonate material, making it one giant skylight. Imagine going to sleep listening to the sound of the rain and waking up to the natural alarm clock of the sun.

A wooden deck sits out front for more entertaining space.

When you’re surrounded by the peace and quiet of the forest, it would be hard not to want to spend all of your time on the outdoor swing with a good book. There’s even small outdoor fireplace to gather with friends and family.

This nature lover’s retreat in Massachusetts goes to show that it doesn’t have to be expensive to build the sanctuary of your dreams.
