We’ve all heard of the 10,000-hour rule – practicing anything for 10,000 hours is enough to make you an expert at that skill.

One skilled man has painted over 1,000 homes and has probably spent 10,000 hours or more painting these homes.

He’s a genius when it comes to home hacks, especially when it comes to painting.

He shared nine clever painting hacks that most people have never heard of but will definitely find helpful.

First, always remove the lint from your roller before using it.

Grab some painter’s tape, stretch it out, and stick the end on your foot to hold it steady. Then run the roller’s nap up and down the painter’s tape.

Doing this will grab the lint from the nap and avoid annoying lint sticking to your wall.

Second tip, to prevent the paint can lid from sticking to the can, get some saran wrap and cover the can’s top.

Put the lid on, and you’ll protect your paint from sticking to it and keep it airtight.

Next, if you do get paint on your lid, he offers a clever hack to remove it.

Use a small nail to hammer a small hole into the edge of the top. He recommends four good pops, leaving enough of a hole for the paint to drain out of the lid.

Fourth, if you hate the smell of paint fumes, grab a bottle of vanilla.

Mix a tablespoon of vanilla into your paint and give it a good stir. The vanilla won’t change the color of your paint, but it will lessen the strong paint smell.

Your house might even smell like freshly-baked cookies!

Fifth, when painting around a doorknob, wrap the doorknob with aluminum foil.

This is easy to do and will immediately protect the knob from getting paint on it. After painting around the knob, remove the foil.

Not only will you have a clean door knob, but you can also reuse the foil again afterward.

Another clever painting hack protects your paint brush from drying up between paint jobs. If you’re like us, we hate when this happens!

To prevent this, simply remove your latex painting glove from your hand and cover the bristles with the glove.

This keeps it fresh and prevents your paintbrush from drying out. Your brush will be fresh and ready when you resume your paint job.

The seventh tip prevents your nap from getting flat.

If you lay your roller in a paint tray or against a wall, the nap will definitely flatten. Instead, use an empty Pringles can to store the nap. Seal it with the lid, and your nap stays round and fresh.

Don’t forget to remove the chips before using the can!

The eighth tip keeps your paint can clean.

Many people, including him, like painting right out of the can. Instead of using the edges of the can to remove excess paint from the brush, put a rubber band around the paint can’s handles.

This creates the perfect squeegee to remove the excess paint from the brush, without dripping paint all over the sides of the can.

His final clever painting hack prevents the paint from drying up on your paintbrush.

Instead of just washing it with running water, run a hair comb through the bristles while rinsing the brush. This will remove all the paint residue that gets stuck on the bristles.
