A lot of people think about how they’ll retire. Some of us want to retire in luxury so we work extra hard to lay the foundations for such dreams.
Others dream of cruise-skipping, filling in their passports with stamps from places all over the world.

Then there are others who just want a piece of land, build their tiny house, and live their days in comfort and serenity.
One such man is Patrick Miller.
Patrick moved from California to Washington after he retired from his business. All throughout the journey, he was tugging along a house – yes, an entire tiny house.

The tiny house measures around 18 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 13 feet high. According to Patrick, he bought the house system from Tumbleweed.
Despite the size, however, it took a while before the house reached its final form.
Patrick shared the entire build spanned for a decade! Now, before you assume that tiny houses are complicated, Patrick explained that he was juggling between the build and his business.
There were weeks or months at a time that he never touched the tiny house. And on the days that he did, he said that the entire process of building was therapeutic.
He moved into a five-acre lot after retirement.
Living off-grid and in a tiny house can have problems of their own. For one, his property is about a mile away from the nearest power line.
This means that Patrick had to build a power system that was efficient and reliable enough to power everything. He also dug a well for water and built a waste system for plumbing.
Let’s jump right to the tour!
The interior sits at around 190 square feet and that could get pretty cramped pretty quickly. To get around this size problem, Patrick planned out the systems well.
He has a compact wood stove for heating. It doesn’t take a lot of space but it does the job well. His L-couch/guest bed also has compartments underneath which saves up a lot of space.
As small as it seems, the tiny house has all the important amenities.
He has a loft-type bedroom over a well-equipped kitchen area. It has a queen-sized bed and a cleverly installed slide-out staircase for easier access. The bed area is also surrounded by windows on three sides.
He also has a fold-up dining table that can fit three people and a laundry area. Finally, Patrick also has a “tiny” bathroom complete with a sink, a toilet, and a shower nook with a soaking tub.
Patrick admitted that living in a tiny house was way easier than it looked.
He also shared that all of this is possible if one isn’t scared of learning new things. The total cost of his build, he shared, is under $30,000.
Most of the savings came from labor and the things he wasn’t afraid of learning and doing by himself like insulation, construction, and creating his power and water systems.
Patrick, together with his husky Barley, shows that everything is possible if you put your heart into it.
